Picked up a 32V434T (ATC010 chassis) RCA digital TV from 2006 from the TV shop. He claimed he never opened it because the customer didn't want to spend much money on it.

When I fired it up, it tried to fire up, chirped loud, and shut down. I discovered that the HOT is shorted and I'd bet the farm the flyback is bad. From what I'm reading, flyback failures are very common on this chassis.

The RCA flyback P/N is 271996. Since these RCA transformers are obviously junk, is there a better replacement for the original RCA part? Tritronics has the original for $27.00 and Electronix has a generic for $11.99. I really don't like to use cheap no name generics unless there's no other choice.

I've never really thought about it; but, I doubt it would work since the pin-out would probably be different and there could be circuit design issues from chassis to chassis that might cause a problem.

So far, all I've found was an RCA original and a "no name" generic. I guess I'll go with the RCA original. I had one of those "no name" jobs blow up after a couple of hours of use.

The flyback is physically smaller in my set. There is a sticker on the chassis that says the HV should be 35 KV. I'm sure the reason these newer RCA flybacks are failing left and right is because they are cheaply made and underrated for the application that they are in. The older RCA flybacks were a lot bigger in size and seem to hold up much better.

While I don't know a whole lot about flybacks, I would think a fluyback from another 32" or even 36" TV would work. Perhaps some jumpering for the pin outs would be needed, but if you know which pin went where, what could go wrong?

Again, I know very little about flybacks, only enough to stay away from messing with them, apart from adjusting the focus and white level.

OK, found an RCA original flyback for $19.99 and installed it and a new HOT and the set is playing (for now). It seems these sets eat flybacks almost as fast as they can be changed.

The picture is OK; but, I've seen better. I'm not impressed with the built in digital tuner. It's not as sensitive as my Digitalstream converter and this TV lacks some of the features of the converter. I guess this was a basic TV built to satisfy the gov't requirement for a digital tuner and nothing more.

Anyway, maybe I can sell this set for a few dollars. I need the space!
