I picked this TV on the sidewalk this morning. The model number does
not yield anything in the usual search engine. I did not find a label
with manufacuting date. Does anyone know anything about this model?

I worked for a Sony authorized repair shop for several years during the 80s and 90s, and I don't recognize that model either. I'm going to guess by the number, without seeing it, that it's early 80s... Is it silver plastic with small round chrome channel 0 - 9 buttons, and a green LED channel readout, and smoked glass over the front of the screen? Can you post a photo (or a physical description?)

There is no Sams listed for a KV1572R but there is a Sams for a KV1972R. I happen to own a KV1972R and I think it was made in '85. It is a mono set in a plastic woodgrain cabinet, remote control, OSD, and cable ready. There is a flip down door below the screen that hides the user adjustments. There is another flip down door below the speaker that hides a switch and a coax connector labeled "HIT". I have no idea what that was for. I suspect the 1572 is the 15" version of my 19" set.

If that 1572 holds up as well as my 1972, you'll have a good set. Mine was discarded by a local TV shop because it had some age on it and lightning hit it. All the customer wanted was an insurance estimate. All I did was replace the rectifier diodes and a resistor and it's been working fine for the 5+ years that I've used it.

It might be a 9 instead of a 5, there was not much light in my garage when I
unloaded the beast. As I said earlier, will be checking on Thursday. So far
I have picked 4 solid-state color TVs on sidewalks, I tried 2, one worked
(early eighties Zenith made in Taiwan) and one smoked (a small cheapo Samsung
I picked near the Sony yesterday). The fourth set was an early eighties
NEC that looks like is had its feet into a flood, a strange model with built-in stereo
amplifier but apparently needing an external multiplex adapter like a late
fifties FM tuner. This NEC and the Sony won't be turned on until the correct
inspections have been done.

A few months ago I was telling myself I would limit my TV collection to two
B&W 21-inch tube type sets, but SS color sets appear to be a dime a dozen
these days...

Does it look like this? I've worked on several like this and the following were the most common problems:

1. Loose connections in the IF module
2. Loose degausing thermistor
3. Shorted rectifier diodes from lightning damage
4. Bad flyback (a bad flyback can take the HOT and regulator with it).
5. Bad voltage regulator IC. The package contains both the audio output and regulator IC's in the same case.
6. Shorted HOT
7. Weak CRT's

Ah, its one of those. Good sets, I've used a couple which looked like that.

IMO, the crts get lose red very quickly in these 19inch trinitrons, then its all downhill from there. I picked up a few like this one and the CRTs were toast yet the rest of the set performed like new. Someone got there money's worth I guess!

Mine appeared to be a low hours set when I got it and I don't watch it that much. Sometimes, it may go several days without getting turned on. It's never been on for more than a few hours at a time. I guess that's why it's held up for 23+ years. I'll watch it until it dies; but, I won't spend much $ on it when it does die.
