I certainly don't need another big set at the moment, but I couldn't resist this one at $2.

At first glance it looks like one of PVM series of "cube" monitors, right down to the swing out detachable speakers. This is actually the first time I've gotten the speakers with one of these sets. None of my Profeel or PVM monitors came with them.

The original fault was a intermittant loss of horizontal sync and/or shut down. After resoldering some suspicious looking joints on the power/delfection board it seems to behaving itself. There is still an occasional crackle and a loud pop through the speakers when changing channels (even when it is muted). I'm in no real hurry to track that down though (I always use my stereo system for sound in my main setup).

I does have an odd "feature" I haven't seen before. The color control affects the RGB input.

I looks like there are at least a couple of related higher end models. There are a lot of unpopulated areas on the PCBs. There is probably a version with twin tuner picture-in-picture and more elaborate geometry correction.

TV's that aren't working just aren't selling at the junk auction anymore as most of the repairers in the area have already given up.

As it is I usually get any left over TVs at the end of the night for free. This one belonged to one of the only vendors that usually takes his unsold stuff back, so I bid $2. I thought someone else would take a punt and outbid me (it was shown running until it lost sync and shut down, so the crowd knew it had a good picture), but no-one did.

In Europe it was a KV-FX29 : one of Sony's first 100Hz "digital" Trinitron, 1990.
Only two SCARTS (Peritel) inputs (1/rgb+composite, 2/yc+composite) - a bit of a let down given the looks and Profeel-like handy (very handy) bars at the top...

I am truly jealous. I love Trinitrons and especially love ones with the thin bezel. It's a damn shame they don't make those anymore.

And for $2! What I'd give to have a thrift shop around here with those kinds of reasonable prices... radiotvnut's thread pretty much sums up how I feel about my local thrift.

Last time I was in there, they wanted $35 for a broken 27" Trinitron TV. It was a low end model from the mid-90's. Not only was it non-operational, the bottom of the (plastic) cabinet was cracked badly. Who knows if the CRT was even any good. UGHHHHH.... I avoid going in there because I leave pissed off every time.

The KV-FX29 is probably a couple of models above this one. There's certainly enough empty space on those PCBs for a lot of additional signal processing. This one is definitely 50/60Hz. It's from either 1989 or 1990, 1 SCART input (RGB/composite), 1 S-video input, 2 composite inputs (1 shared with the S-video input).

Karmaman: Look for a junk auction in your area (look for tiny ads in the classifieds, these kinds of places don't advertise much). Most of the stuff at these auctions is unreserved, so you'll often get stuff for the minimum bid.

I don't attend auctions very often, since they are so time consuming, but you can get real bargains on stuff like this. I would not be surprised to pick one up at a local sale for a couple bucks; just have to wait around for a couple hours while they sell a bunch of other stuff.

There were a couple Sony sets there last night that I could have had for under $10. This time I did resist though. One was a 34" (KV-34NS15?) with a bad CRT. The other was a 27" that was supposedly working when brought in, but wouldn't start up on the night. It was probably only suffering from the usual dry joints, but that series all seem to have weak CRTs.

There was also a VPH-2020QM 7" CRT projector, but there was a reserve on that. I thought about it, but I don't have a room big enough for a 200" screen.
