Am I the only one that thinks this is the wrong size CRT for this Motorola? At first I thought it had just slipped down a bit, but closer inspection reveals that the OD of the picture tube is smaller than that of the frame glass. My reasoning is that the original owner could not find the replacement tube in the correct size and improvised. :scratch2:

Yes, that is an 8" set but that tube looks like a 7" 7JP4.
The 8" tube is much harder to find.
Is it yours?

I would never be confused with any kind of authority on the subject but simple visual inspection tells me only one of two possible options:
1. The tube is missing some kind of ring that goes around it to make it fit properly, or...
2. Somebody stuck one in that looked close in size in the box...

No, the set is not mine, but on eBay, rather.

Here's a similar set with a correctly-mounted tube.

The kinescope renewal as it appears in the first-shown set doesn't encourage me as to how the set will survive shipping. The seller needs first to get the back off and assure that the CRT is well anchored before packing it up as described. My money is not on the prospect of this; it looks like a pure hack-job.

Scary! Looks like something I would have done.....
I wonder what "broke" in order for the tube to fall down like it did... I assume that whom ever stuffed it in there, probably had it centered at one time... otherwise watching movies with subtitles would be a pure pain! :)
Thanks,

It should look like this.

That's a fairly common thing to see. Probably the 8BP4 went bad when the set was 10 years old & worthless, so they stuck a 7JP4 in it to use in a back room, or something. I've probably seen ten 8" Motorolas with a 7JP4 in them.

That's interesting:scratch2: So the tube pinout was the same on both sizes, I assume.

Tube pin out is exactly the same on both tubes. I have that model in ratty shape, with a good 8" tube. I wrote the owner about the set. I may bid on it, and, switch my good parts to it, and, re build it.
Mine is in pretty bad shape.

Sounds like a plan to me, and it gets a good home, too :thmbsp:
