Everyone,

Sometime in the mid-80's we bought a Sony Trinitron KV-1207 television.

Since then we have used it as a second tv, and the colors and contrast are still as good as new. Amazing television.

However, I've noticed over the years that the picture is not as sharp as it was when it was new. Hard to describe, but it has a sort of horizontal "ghosting". This appears no matter the input, whether by antenna from over-the-air broadcast, cable input from satellite, etc.

Assuming the cause is the picture being out of adjustment, can I adjust the picture myself? I notice a number of adjustment screws on the back: "H Stat", "Focus", "Scrn", "R BKG", "G BKG" "B BKG" and a couple more.) Are these the remaining adjustments for the picture, or are there more internally on the chassis? Does full adjustment require special equipment to do right?

(Hopefully picture adjustment is all that is needed. But, is there a possibility that some components need replacing, such as capacitors?)

Btw, if anyone reading this lives in the Salt Lake City area and is interested in helping diagnose and maybe even fix the problem, let me know! (And of course references are invited.) I suspect that if I brought the Sony to an "old-time" tv repair shop randomly picked out of the Yellow Pages, that they'd charge an arm and a leg, with no guarantee they could improve the picture quality.

If the ghosting is red and blue, then the horizontal convergence is off. The H Stat should fix it unless a part has failed. You would need to adjust it so the red, green, and blue exactly overlap to form white in the center of the screen.

Thanks! Adjusting the "H Stat" greatly reduced the "ghosting". I got rid of most of it, but there is a little bit of ghosting remaining, and I wish I had a little more left in the "H Stat" screw. Not sure what this means, such as if a capacitor is losing its mojo.

What do the "R/G/B BKG" adjustments do, and do they interact with "H Stat"? As far as I can tell, the color is normal; the Red, Green and Blue look balanced.

I also notice a "V Size" screw, which I assume is the "vertical size" (duh). And two more smaller holes with screws in them which are not marked (not sure if they are adjustment screws, or something else.)

Again, thanks! The picture quality is significantly better. I am thinking of someday recapping this set (if I do, what else should be replaced?)

Btw, pertaining to the 5" Sony Trinitron televisions which do intrigue me, an online search found at least the following models: KV-5000, KV-5020, KV-5100, KV-5200, and KV-5300. The 5000/5100 appear similar, and the 5200/5300 are similar. Are there any others? And which model(s) are considered the better ones from a design/repair/quality viewpoint? Or they all the same with only cabinet differences?

Doesn't the HSTAT block also contain the HV shutdown circuit? I've seen these fail and leave the set in shutdown mode.
