Movies not all that well known and worth seeking out in your opinion. One I positively love is a little black comedy with a seedy cast of characters and funny, funny lines . . Thick As Thieves with Alec Baldwin, Andre Braugher, Rebecca De Mornay, Michael Jai White, and more.

Another is Montana with Kyra Sedgewick, Stanley Tucci, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and John Ritter. Also a black comedy about bad guys with plot twists and double crosses up the wazoo. Get a load of Robin Tunney as Kitty in this!

Wonderful story, great visuals. Very rich production.

Smooth Talk. 1985. An absorbing, psychological coming-of-age drama. Great performances by an 18 year old Laura Dern as a teenager on the verge of womanhood, and Treat Williams as a somewhat sinister stranger. The ending leaves you guessing.

I really liked The Big Bus and Cold Turkey. The latter actually has some cachet (Norman Lear's full length motion picure). The former is roundly considered to be awful; I think it's hysterical.

On a less ludicrous plane, I think that Douglas Trumbull's movie Silent Running, starring Bruce Dern, is terrific. Trumbull was responsible for the special effects in Kubrick's 2001; and he does a great job with same in this early-1970's eco-scifi film. Silent Running also introduces a literal forerunner of C3PO in its three droids, Huey, Duey, and Louie. Double-amputee actors provided many of the actions of the tiny droid costumes.

I watched a film call the "Grand Canyon" a few weeks ago. It stars Danny Glover, Kevin Kline, and Steve Martin. I had never heard about it before but I must say I really enjoyed.

HENDRIX: Wood Harris, Billy Zane, Dorian Haywood. The rise and fall of Jimi Hendrix infused with great music.

Peter Cook and Dudley Moore's movies Bedazzled (the original and classic) and The Wrong Box. English flicks up there with the best of Monty Python.

Not necessarily the best diamonds in the rough or hidden gems, imho, but I enjoyed watching:

Thank You For Smoking- Topical (about marketing) and witty. This is good but has stayed small. Came out a couple of years ago.

Basquiat- About the New York art scene and the painter. Nice use of music thruout.

straight off the top of my head, in the spirit of this thread: I Shot Andy Warhol, starring Lili Taylor as Valerie Solanas and Jared Harris as Warhol; plus a bunch of great cameo's portraying various scenesters from the Factory. Taylor is delectably batty and believable as Solanas, whose gunshot to the gut started the health problems that eventually ended Warhol's life. and, a really good soundtrack PLUS a party scene at the Factory, with Yo La Tengo playing the Velvet Underground. nice!!

OK, here's another one-Ghost World, Scarlett Johannsen before she was ScarJo, Thora Birch, and Steve Buscemi in Terry Zwigoff's adaptation of a graphic novel by Daniel Clowes about two social outsider teen girls who protect themselves with a shared cynicism about the world. they decide to play a cruel joke on somebody and lure Steve Buscemi, another outsider, into the mix. it is a great, great film.

Local Hero - A nice, quiet hysterical film. Mark Knopfler does the soundtrack.

Hot Fuzz - very silly, strangly, Mark Knopfler does the soundtrack on this one also.

Men with Brooms - Canadian, about Curling, sorta. Great actors, very funny.

Housekeeping - black humor. Orphaned sisters, their hobo aunt comes to take care of them. Christine Lahti's best acting.

Eat, Drink, Man, Woman - Japanese with Subs. One of Ang Lee's best films. Best film of the decade (1994) IMHO.

Like Water for Chocolate - What can I say, nude bareback riding. A film both extremely silly, bizzare, and sweet at the same time.

The Beiderbecke Affair - Actually an English mini-series. Hysterical. Also great soundtrack to you Jazz lovers out there. You can find it on DVD.

All of these also have the stamp of approval from my wife, so they are movies you can watch together. But not necessarilly with the kids in most cases.

3 Days In The Valley-Many fine actors in several intertwining stories.From the mid nineties.And Charlize Theron is one sexy evil doer.

Brazil-Terry Gilliam(of Monty Python animation fame)creates a satirical nightmare future world,with art direction that just has to be seen to be believed.

The Lookout-The extremely talented kid from 3rd Rock from the Sun stars in this thriller/character study from a few years ago.

Freeway-Reese Witherspoon,Kiefer Sutherland.Mid nineties insanity.Not one likeable,redeemable character in the whole cast.And funny as hell.

Project A-Jackie Chan,Sammo Hung in their best film.Funny,and action scenes so good,so clever they will have you shaking your head in disbelief.

Floundering-A very well written social commentary on race and class set in L.A. right after the riots.Thoughtful and engaging,with several star cameos.

They All Laughed-Screwball comedy set in NY in 1981 or so.Ben Gazarra, Audrey Hepburn,John Ritter,Colleen Camp.Very much of its time and place,and quite funny,and a little touching.Notable as the last screen appearance of Dorothy Stratten.
Contains one of my all time favorite lines-"Im on the narrow edge of a precipice,and even the slightest additional irritation could send me hurling into a gaping abyss,from which I doubt I would recover."

Defending Your Life is one of the funniest movies Ive ever seen.I think Rip Torn's performance is one of the 10 best comedic performances of all time.
