Doug was kind enough to give me this lovely Silvertone color set (see http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?threadid=11263 ).

Tried it for the first time a couple weeks ago, picture came in really blurry but in color, left it on for a couple mins, and "fzzzzzzz.....POP!" a perfect black and white picture :dunno:

I still have to do a tube check, etc, on this set, but I've never heard a fizz pop when a tube goes.....any thoughts? ;)

It sounds like something in the HV, or focus supply arced. I don't know why that would take out the color unless it damaged a part in the chroma circuit when it arced. Does this set use any transistors in the chroma circuit?

This set looks a lot like a CTC-17...I saw that the focus lead was routed down in around the chroma circuitry...could that lead have arced to a chroma component? I would check the 3.58 oscillator for negative grid bias voltage to see if it is operating.

Also you can check the chroma channel by turning the set off the channel with the fine tuning, then turn the color control up and down. If the chroma signal is passing through, you should be able to change the coloration of the picture from black/white to blue or purple---if it passes this test, the problem probably is that the 3.58 osc. is not running.
