Hey guys, I'm brand new to the forum, and new to the capping experience. I am restoring a 1953 Muntz that I just re-capped, what a fun project this has been! Replaced a few tubes on this set as well, including the HV Rect tube which was making a lot of noise. I wanted to get your opinion on the nature of what I am getting. Please take a look at the photo below and let me know what you think? Really appreciate any suggestions.

Try playing with the horizontal oscillator coil. The set is locking at a wrong frequency, probably 2/3th or 1 1/2 times the correct frequency.

Welcome to the forum! I cant help you too much except tell you to make sure everything is within specs. Since Muntz was manufactured with as few parts as possible to make it work, all values whether resistors or capacitors are critical. Any subs can alter its performance greatly. All tubes have to test well also. Good luck!

Some sets have more limited travel in the horizontal hold control than do others. On some models you can get it to lock at, say, 4 pictures side-by-side, then turn it a few cranks and end up with 3, then 2, then finally one. But if you can only get this picture to lock-in within the travel of your horiz. hold then look for a seperate horiz. adjustment. Barring that, I would doublecheck to make sure there isn't another black beauty lurking somewhere in the circuit.

I found what could be all or some of the problem...I tested all the resistors in the horizontal circuit and found one that was totally off spec and a few others low and high. I ordered new ones and hopefully that will do it. It was so cool to get this baby fired up after new caps and a new HV Rect. tube!!

Congrats on that Muntz: looks like it has a really strong CRT and should give a nice picture when you get the horizontal ironed out. Takes me back to the days of Mamie & Ike!
