Well, I was working on getting a parts order together, when I accquired a Sylvania color set that needs caps as well. So, it seems that I'm going to be buying quite a large number of capacitors and I was wondering - what kinds of capacitors do people here prefer? I've been using the little yellow ones from JustRadios. They look pretty good and they're slightly cheaper. But I know that the orange drops are also very popular. Is there any advantage/disadvantage to one type of cap over another?

I've used both the yellow ones and the orange drops with excellent results. Sometimes, the OD's are a little big for some spaces.

If your solder iron slips up against the yellow ones it's wasted.

I like the yellow ones, Orange drops are nice but expensive and difficult to use in most cases because they were designed for PC board use and the leads are stiff.

In any case the yellow ones are probably still light years better than anything made in the 40's-early 50's.

Ditto to radiotvnut. I have used both kinds and consider them equivalent. And they will probably outlive us all.

The little yellow ones are easier to fit into tight spaces. I haven't gone to this length in a TV project, but if you want to restuff the old paper capacitor shells with new caps, the yellow ones are your only choice.

I've been using Justradio's budget bulk Mylars. They're cheap but have short leads, so I sometimes have to extend them and cover in heatshrink.

Either is fine. I have been using Mallory 150's from mouser. These are quite similar to the justradios ones. I prefer axial parts for point to point wired chassis. However, you can't really go wrong with orange drops either. Since they're radial, they're a little harder to use, but it's not like radial parts were never used in point to point chassis. All the dogbone resistors of the 30's were radial. I'd stick with the justradios ones, especially if I was ordering a bunch.
