Hi, Everyone -

First-time poster here, so be gentle... :thmbsp:

I'm wondering whether anyone has experienced the following:
- a few nites ago, my relatively new 27" Magnavox color TV started experiencing a horizontal black area starting to move down the screen - like a shade being pulled down on the screen. Right now, it's reached about 2-3 inches, and appears to have stopped moving down --- for now... ;)

Anyone experienced this?

Is the picture becoming squashed while this happens? If the picture is squashed, your vertical is shrinking for some reason.

If the picture is simply being cut off, it's most likely the station putting a black bar on the screen for whatever reason... or something futzing up on the OSD

PS: if you can take a picture of your TV screen and upload it here, that would help greatly.

Thanks for the response. It appears that the picture is being cut off, but it is occuring on every channel instead of just one.

Sorry, but I'm not familiar with "OSD" - EXTREMELY TECH CHALLENGED here... ;) The set is relatively new (about a year old). Drives me nutz because it's hard for me to see the litle channel indicator in the upper left hand side when I change channels. I'll probably have to break down and take it in.... BOOOOOOOO....

Can you find a chassis number on the back of the set?

The L01.1U is the newest one I've seen; but, it sounds like you have vertical deflection trouble from what you say. Most likely there are bad capacitors in the vertical circuit. I wouldn't continue to watch the set as is, as these caps can cause the vertical output IC to fail. The IC is not expensive; but, no need in ruining a good part. If you are not experienced with soldering, I'd find a qualified / honest TV technician in your area and take the set in for an estimate. You should be able to have it fixed for less than $100 if it just needs caps and maybe a vertical output IC. Some of the "shops" around here do nothing but charge a check out fee up front and then keep the set (untouched) for six months or they charge $250 for a repair that should cost $75.

THANKS SO MUCH for the input!!!! I really appreciate it. I checked around, at work, to see if anyone knew of a reputable repair person and will check around again tomorrow. I'll definately take your advice.

Ahhhhh.... I've only been on for an hour or so, but ya know me sooo well - course I usually reserve the whole "whipping" thing for weekends. Maybe, if I have to take my tv in, I may have some free time.... HEHEHE

This TV had no Picture on the top half of screen and some retrace lines in the center of screen . I found 2465 10uf @ 160v completely open. 2446 was 2/3 of it rated capacity at 470uf @ 16v. Replacing them was no help. I Found surface mount diode 6460 shorted. The diode is a 482213011397 nla but NTE633 will replace it. I used a nte177 to replace it and it appears to be fine. Could be a common problem when these cap go off value. Figured I would post it here
