View Full Version : Found another Maggie combo.. Bad flyback
freakaftr8 01-09-2008, 11:44 PM Found another one.. This one is really nice 8/66 date code and a U2002bb chassis identical to my u9109bb I have, flyback is burned up. This model is a remote unit I believe, It hads buttons for power and volume and has some odd module bolted to the floorboard under the stereo unit. Anyway Does anyone have a flyback for this set and does anyone know why the old one cooked?
Thanks!
radotvguy 01-10-2008, 06:35 AM for some reason i am told , magnavoxs tend to cook flybacks . I came across two that had cooked flybacks . My parents bought a new mag in 67 and in the mid 70s i remember the flyback cooked . I have a spare mag chassis , i will check if its the one you have . It came out of a combo.
sampson159 01-10-2008, 07:58 AM i had three of those sitting in my living room back in the early 80s with cooked flybacks. this probably led to my wife leaving me and our divorce. for some reason, those units were hard on flybacks. the replacements i used to get seemed to be bigger and heavier. never had a problem. my wife got bigger and
heavier too. always had problems, even with her replacement!
kx250rider 01-10-2008, 11:36 AM I used to see bad FBTs in those all the time, but I would condemn the set when that was the problem. It's a PITA to replace the FBT in those sets. Being that it was common to have bad ones, I would think that there should be plenty of aftermarket ones floating around. I maintain a roundie Magnavox combo for a local collector (non-tech), and his, miraculously, has the original FBT. Just has had 9,278 other annoying and hard-to-troubleshoot problems.

radotvguy 01-10-2008, 11:48 AM well i found that some of those mag flybacks are hard to find . Being they were a common problem , most of the old stock has been dried up . I had a combo a few years back whick i needed a 361197-1 and i couldnt find it anywhere and wound up disguarding the set . Anytime i see mag chassis or flys i usually grab them becuase i am fond of their cabinets and try to keep spare parts . However the house is becoming overloaded .
freakaftr8 01-10-2008, 04:23 PM Shoot.. Well cool, hopefully I can find one.. This set is sweet!
freakaftr8 01-10-2008, 05:55 PM Well here are some pics, you can see the melted flyback too! Props to my digital camera! lol

We need to find someone to make replacement flybacks. I wonder if one of those generic flyback companies could be persuaded to make some commonly needed ones.
sampson159 01-10-2008, 09:05 PM that cabinet is choice!!! great style. i am happy for you. save this one!!!!!

It would be nice; but, I don't see it happening. I don't think there would be enough demand for them to show interest. In fact, I look for the flybacks for newer sets to be discontinued as time goes on due to the declining popularity of CRT sets.
One other nice thing would be for someone to start making sweep tubes again. I can come near seeing that happen because of Ham radio operators.

I wonder if the Chinese would make the flybacks, I know that they are eager to make anything... I get popups on my computer about china production this and that.. We should send specs and see what the costs would be... But I hope the reliability would be better than the food they have been sending over here........ I hate to outsource something but I dont see us making these cheap.
Bill R 01-11-2008, 08:30 PM They will make anything IF you want to by a million of them. There just wouldn't be enough of a market to make any money. What might be a better alternative is if someone could do the engineering to write instructions for using flybacks from other seto in the more rare sets. In other words there really arent that many flyback designs so how about a way to modify an RCA fly to work in a Magnavox set. Other option might be rewinding the flyback. I have seen some not to pretty attempts at this though, but maybe with the tools it would be possible. Like CRT rebuilding.

freakaftr8 01-11-2008, 10:12 PM Wll I tested that 25gp22 CRt in this set, blue came back, green is fair and red is weak, it took a couple of minutes for any of the guns to register anything. Running the heater voltage at 8 volts for a few minuted brings red up. But it drops back down after a few back at 6.3v. Im going to leave it cooking at 8v overnight... Good idea?
radiotvnut 01-11-2008, 10:25 PM I don't think cooking it will hurt anything. If that does not work, you could try rejuvenating it provided your checker is not one of those "atomic blast" models from the '60's or '70's.
I noticed the "green halo" on the tube. I wonder if it's an original Magnavox or a newer one (like a Zenith).
It looks like it arced from the plate cap to the core. Have you investigated the damage more closely? I've heard that when RCAs do that they can sometimes be saved by removing the rubber tire and insulating it with HV silicone. If the arcing and burning was confined to the rubber, it may be fixable.
freakaftr8 01-12-2008, 02:34 PM No actually the whole rubber tire was loose and there were windings sticking out everywhere. As soon as I touched it the whole thing disintigrated. Too bad, and the boards were extremely brittle and when I took the Vert and Horiz osc tubes out the board cracked apart... Chassis is smoked. Wonder if anyone has a spare chassis. The good thing is that I fixed my other magnavox combo. I might take that chassis and swap it into this set! I left the CRT on last night, blue and green came back, red was weak, I used the rejuv button on the red just once, red came back with force, it's reading strong now, a bit above blue and green and holding.
freakaftr8 01-12-2008, 02:38 PM The TV has the orig magnavox tube as far as I can tell. It's got a magnavox label on the crt

zenithfan1 01-12-2008, 11:27 PM I have a '65 Maggie combo w/ french provincial cabinet. I also have the green halo, the CRT has been replaced with a Sylvania Color Bright '85. Most of the cataract plagued Maggies I've seen with the original CRT have the black "mold like" symptom.

KentTeffeteller 01-13-2008, 08:45 AM Hi,
The Achilles heel on Maggie TV sets is the Blankety-Blank Flybacks. Most of these had many replacements throughout their lives. Made me good money when I was young.
Chad Hauris 01-13-2008, 01:02 PM It seems like the flybacks may be susceptible to trouble but I wonder what the most likely cause of the flyback stress is? Excess horizontal output tube current draw or HV regulator problems? I've got one Magnavox table model with a similar chassis and there were problems in the 6BK4 grid/cathode circuit which were causing the flyback to overheat (burning smell)
I was able to fix it and reduce the current draw in the 6BK4 circuit to the normal 800-1000 microamps and it seems to be operating OK now.
On another Mag. console with a similar chassis the 6BK4 was drawing so much current there was no picture. It was just loading down the HV too much. It seems like it needed a new 6BK4 plus repairs to the grid/cathode circuit
freakaftr8 01-13-2008, 04:44 PM Does anyone happen to have a spare chassis? I would love to make both of these sets work.. If you dont, a spare flyback and a spare horiz osc board that incorperates the vertical and pincushion circuits would be a big help!
freakaftr8 01-14-2008, 10:29 PM Well I swapped chassis tonigt! Success! The 25GP22 looks good, needing some covergence adjustments, im performing them now. Ill take some pics of this set too! Hey does anyone have the Astro-Sonic remote for this set?
freakaftr8 01-16-2008, 03:59 PM Well here is the set in operation, watching Family Guy of course, I love that show! lol, well as you can see, the 25GP22 puts out a raster, not the best I have seen, the 23EGP22 looked way better, but it does work and all 3 guns read into the good range. Wonder if the crt protecive glass has something to do with that, my 67 Zenith at home has the same CRT, but the pic is much clearer and not washy like this one. I know the chassis is good because it's the same chassis that powered the 23EGP22. The yoke is not the same although. Convergence in this one has been a nightmare and is still not that great. Could that be the yoke as well?

freakaftr8 01-17-2008, 01:33 AM Now it looks absolutly flawless! Finessed convergence tweaks and found some tubes bad in the AGC section.
