I've been talking about this for weeks now- 4 or 5 of 'em, at least.
It's recommended you open your "doors of perception" verrrrrry wide before hand to benefit most from it.
But doors opened or closed, it is at least a lot of fun.
Consensus is it's good for the first spin through the disc, but as the movie goes on and the disc peters out, so does the effect. Though that may alsdo have something to do with the "keys" wearing off.
Anyhow, what do you have to lose besides a few brain cells and a few hours?
Worst case, you just watched an interesting classic of a film, and listened to one hell of a good album.

I only started hearing about this a few years ago. Its on my "to do" list.

Do it. There are instructions on the Internet where to cue up the LP or CD. I think it is when the MGM Lion roars, but don't quote me.
I may do it with my kids soon since they are familiar with both the album and the movie. I doubt that I will be opening up my doors of perception other than with a hearty stout.

Oh, I know what it was Alaric. The stumblebums who used it liked to think it was THC but it was some kind of downer, PCP perhaps but who knows? But you could smoke all the pot in the world and not get as messed up as a tic user.
I used to work as a bouncer for Jam Productions, a rock show promoter in Chicago. One rainy day we were watching the crowd lined up in the alley outside the Aragon Ballroom prior to a Scorpions show. Anyway this one kid was barefooted, barechested and covered in mud and we watched him drain a bottle of bumwine in a couple of swallows. So my buddy approaches him and says "You on drugs?"
The kid pounds his chest and replies "Me no drugs, me tic!".
Alaric 01-09-2008, 12:54 PM Yeah , PCP was sold as THC for quite a few years. Real THC vanished many years before crap stopped being marketed as such. When pot became very good , there was no real market for "T" . Waitaminnit-are we discussing this in PUBLIC??? Holy Shit! Prank caller-prank caller-I'm hanging up now!
There is a lot of music I liked from the 70s that , shall we say , lost it's charm whilst sober. The era and the music will never translate well. If you did it first , everything else is a pale copy.
Alaric 01-09-2008, 12:58 PM P.S. Did you see the Scorpions first U.S. tour? I saw them open for Uncle Ted at the Miami-Hollywood Sportatorium during the 'Zoo Tour'. Wow. There was a big riot outside , but what a concert.
Tom Brennan 01-09-2008, 01:00 PM There is a lot of music I liked from the 70s that , shall we say , lost it's charm whilst sober.
Yeah, I know what you mean, same goes for lots of late 60s "hippy" music. I can still listen to Sam and Dave but not Jefferson Airplane.
I don't think that was the Scorpions first American tour, not sure. I saw Foghat their first American tour, they opened for the Kinks at the Aragon and blew the Kinks right out of town. Man, what a show Foghat put on.
Alaric 01-09-2008, 01:16 PM I loved Foghat! The best concert I ever saw had a local band open , then Motorhead , Foghat , Blue Oyster Cult , and Heart as the headliner. BOC wouldn't be the same without the independent salesmen wandering around with 'Red Dragon-Orange Sunshine-Blue Dolphin" , but Ann Wilson sounded better live than any Heart album I've ever heard. I think it was 1984. The Miami Baseball Stadium was a terrible venue , but it was a fantastic show. I saw Uncle Ted 10 or 12 years in a row in S. FL , and always enjoyed it. Also saw Floyd , ZZ Topp , Bad Co. , etc. I had tickets to see Led Zep in Miami when it got rained out , and got the replacement tix to see them in Gainesville. Heard John Bohnam died and flushed the tickets. AAAARRRRRGGGHHHHHH!
ekmanning5 01-09-2008, 04:24 PM I used to work as a bouncer for Jam Productions, a rock show promoter in Chicago.
Used to roadie for a local Chicago band by the name of The Odd. They were a Jam Productions group.

What, you mean spinning Pink Floyd while watching The Wizard of Oz ISN"T the kind of thing downer users think profound?
Oh, I don't think that <everyone> who spins Pink Floyd while watching The Wizard of Oz is a qualuude or tic user. Though I suspect they have much in common.
As for Pink Floyd's penchant for drug induced noodling, well I was trying to put a good face on it; God forbid such aimless musical blather has another cause.

The Dark Side Of The Rainbow
aka
The Dark Side Of Oz
This disc contains the movie "The Wizard Of Oz" (1939) synced up with audio
from the album "Dark Side Of The Moon" by Pink Floyd (1973).
http://members.cox.net/stegokitty/dsotr_pages/dsotr.htm
This is a custom made, high quality production. I did a lot of research and
work to make sure everything syncs up properly throughout the whole movie.
Getting this synced by hand is extremely difficult. Normally the method people
use is to start playing the CD about 3rd lion roar after the start of the movie.
This is difficult to do, and does not help with re-syncing after the first
playing of the album. Some of the best coolest syncs are during 2nd playing
of the album.
You will notice a three second pause in the audio about 32 minutes into the
movie, during the scene change from Munchkin land to the scarecrow. This is
because the Wizard of Oz copies released after 1989 had restored footage, 1
/2 second before the munchkin scene and 3 seconds after, which would
messes up the sync (Dark Side of the Moon was released in 1973, and
thus the 1973 version of the movie would have been what was used if the bad
did this match on purpose. ) I added a break in the album at this point (during
the first playing of the album only) to allow the album to resync to the movie.
While working with the audio streams from the Movie and Pink Floyd CD, the sound
was never compressed. I only worked with the audio data in .wav format, to
preserve the highest sound quality.
This disc includes several audio tracks. The first is just the Pink Floyd album
playing by itself. The second is both the original movie soundtrack and the
Pink Floyd album playing at the same time. The third is the english sound track
by itself. The Fourth audio track is the French dubbed movie soundtrack,
and the Fifth audio track is the Spanish dubbed movie soundtrack.
English, French, and Spanish subtitles are also included.
I hope you have as much fun watching this as I did making it.

Indeed Pink Floyd has denounced it.
And it's very subjective, how much you believe it works. It seems obvious that one needs to really be flexible to get the most out of it, willing to stretch a bit.
The fact it's an old stoner perpetuated propaganda of pot doesn't help legitimize it either.
That all said, it's still a lot of fun to try, and I bet quite enjoyable for some folk, either sober or stoned.
Coincidence? Yeah. But that need not distract from the fun of it.

They are very good.
I had a "chip-off" betwixt those and the Cape Cod brand.
As good as the Kettles are, the Cape Cod brand, in all their raw, mouth-bleeding, tongue-swelling, lip-cutting glory, remained victorious.
Especially chased with some Cherry Garcia.

I'm all jacked up on Dunkin Donuts Dark Roast coffee and pissed that so many songs fade out rather than end jarringly and now I find out that I have to sync up The Division Bell with a Chuck Heston flick when I get home after yelling at my employees. I gotta relax and grab some of deli's food choices before I blow a gasket or reach for the Secanol or 'ludes and, god forbid, start noodling and/or jamming on my guitar.
Rex Everything 01-10-2008, 11:50 AM floyd denounced what?

Ease on down the road, brother.

Everyone knows Gilmour and his wife were watching those damn dirty apes when they wrote the album.

Tom Brennan 01-10-2008, 12:24 PM Heston was in many good pictures but he himself never made a picture good, indeed many pictures were good despite him rather than because of him.
He was so pompous too, you'd see him on TV saying "Well as you know the stage is my first love but I missed the opprotunity to do King Lear on the London stage because I had to rush back to Hollywood and do Soylent Green....."

Soylent Green is probably best viewed with the sound off, synced to whatever is in the CDP or on the TT. You might even go so far as to turn the picture off, too.
Jack Lord 01-10-2008, 01:43 PM You are mad.

I absolutely love Planet of the Apes and Omega Man. If those come on the boob tube, I'm glued.
Soylent Green mails it in, man. Even Edward G. Robinson in that sappy death scene.
Jack Lord 01-10-2008, 02:07 PM Bah! People sleeping on the stoops and fire escapes, the guards with machine guns at the doorways- its outragous.

PhoenixRisin 01-10-2008, 02:09 PM I'd rather hear Judy sing "Over the Rainbow" than hear any of Pink Floyd's drug induced noodling.
It's a shame that Floyd gets accused of "drug induced noodling" all the time, simply because the people that may have enjoyed their music back then were so identifiable with drug culture.
After they all watched their founder and frontman Syd Barrett become a vegetable from LSD abuse in 1967, they claim that they really lost interest in and were saddened by drugs and drug culture and really didn't do drugs after that. And that was 1967, 5 years before Dark Side of the Moon, and well before they were even famous outside of London.
I'm sure they realize that people associate them with drugs and that they will never convince people that they themselves weren't big drug takers.
Either way, nobody can deny that they were/are still incredibly relevant musicians and have created music that untold millions around the world have enjoyed and cherished.
Something I've always prided myself on is being able to differentiate between things that I'm just not into and things that suck. I'm not into Miles Davis, but that doesn't mean he sucks.
Call me overly defensive, but as a professional musician, I have often been accused of being a druggy or a lowlife simply because I play a guitar for my paycheck, and that's a very narrow minded and judgmental way of thinking.
No offense meant to anyone, just my non-drug induced ramblings.

An excellent point. I don't think the Three Stooges are funny but it's obviously absurd to tell someone laughing at them that they're not funny. Usually I take care to couch my opinions as such---"I think Pink Floyd sucks" or "to me Charlton Heston is a cigar-store Indian of an actor"---rather than as a statement of objective fact. When it comes to entertainment one person's taste is as valid as another's.
On the other hand we can have a little fun with these guys too, they DO put themselves in the public eye afterall.
Thanks for the post.

Very well written.
Definately sad that the drug addiction got control over Barrett, and not that Barrett got control of the drug addiction.
I'd like to add one thing though- demonizing the drug use is the simple way to quantify the problem.
Many folks- musicians, lawyers, artists, professors- are able to keep the use to either a low-impact, or to beneficial use, much as the casual drinker who has a scotch at a wedding or a Bahama Mama when on a cruise to the Cayman Islands.
It's unfortunate that it's so easy to cross the line into abuse.
Back to Pink floyd- indeed, I've never perceived them as a bunch of "stoned, 24-7" artists as I just couldn't comprehend anyone functioning at such an artistic level if always glued to a bottle or some other method of mind alteration. Sure, maybe a "vacation" or "travel" within one's mind on occasion, for inspiration or to peek in those doors of alternate perception, but not 24-7.

While I don't like everything Floyd has done , DSOM is , for me , a tremendous work. I saw David Gilmour at the Candy Store in Ft. He was also mentally ill. Dosing on LSD or even drinking alot is going to intensify such a state of mind. Had Syd been less of an imbiber, he might have logged in a few more years with Floyd. But I would guess that the mental illness would have nailed him sooner or later. The life of a rock star, clean or not, would have collided with his state of mind.
Note that after he was clean and in a controlled environment, he actually had a calm, if uneventful life. He was lucky to have a family that could care for him. All those homeless you see on the street? Those are other Syd Barretts.
A fascinating person, he was.
