on the 12th of January I'm hiring a minibus and taking my family, sister, brother, their kids, and parents for a day out to various attractions. At the end of the long day I'd like to all sit around my parents new big screen and have us all watch a movie together

It'd need to be fairly engrossing from the beginning because 12 people ranging from 8yo to 74yo won't stand for much before they start to yawn and meander away.

Any takers?

Happy Feet! Looks great on a larger screen. Great for kids and pretty funny for most others although the upper end of the scale may not quite appreciate it as much.

Appropriate for all ages.

spencers mountain is a great family film.
night of the grizzly-scenery is beautiful
we are screening in my movie room-"it happened on 5th avenue"and when the kids are asleep, we are watching "more dead than alive" western with clint walker and vincent price.

How about E.T. or Cocoon.

I watched Bridge To Terabithia with my 18 year old daughter and wife and had a tear in my eye near the end. Made by Disney it has great special effects and an excellent story.

I just loved Hairspray(The new remake).Funny,great music,just a happy movie.

I second, third, and fourth ‘Spencer’s Mountain’. Not quite as good as the book but real good.

Any Disney movie with Maurice Chevalia.; ‘IN SEARCH OF THE CASTAWAYS’ being the best.

‘8 Degrees Below’, but be forewarned that there are some sad parts in the movie.

‘Rascal’ if you can find it.

Ahhh... the family movie dilemma, something appropriate for the young ones which doesn't bore the old ones. I would think about Ratatouille or one of the Ice Age movies. If you want to avoid cartoons, I think the Agent Cody Banks movies also work well in this situation.

I 2nd the Incredibles. It's my favorite of the recent animated children's movies & buddy I've seen them all multiple times with a 3y/o in the house.

Don't forget "Finding Nemo" a classic with great graphics.

Finding Nemo gets my vote with a close second going to Ice Age.

What is great about The Rocketeer is that any age can watch it and enjoy it. It is one of my favorites from that standpoint. It has just about everything. There are a couple violent scenes but it is either off camera or only briefly shown. If there are real young ones it could be upsetting. Overall though a rollicking good time.

I don't forget it living in this town ;) Probably not a good fit for your occasion but nonetheless something that the thread title sparks in my mind is the Journey of Natty Gann from the eighties. Always liked that one, Jack Londonesque with the Disney stamp of approval.

Time Bandits (with Sean Connery) Delightfully surreal and even has a moral at the end you can all sit around and discuss.

Otherwise, I strongly second Spirited Away by Hayao Miyazaki who is considered by many the Walt Disney of Japanese anime (only better...)
English voice acting is ok, but best viewed with the original Japanese voice actors and English subtitles. (which is a great subtle ploy to get kids to read more.)

Then there's always the 20th anniversary release of Tron. Digital fun for the whole family.

I second Dutch. A very nice movie for the whole family with good morals and a touching story.

A couple more of our favorites included Babe and Babe Pig in the City. I was extremely scepitical of watching these at first, but they realy are superbly done and have a compelling story for old and young alike. Two thumbs up!

In addtion to some newer goodies mentioned above, old family-rated big-budget scifi, like Journey to the Center of the Earth, Forbidden Planet, War of the Worlds (not the newer more "adult" remakes) - I think an 8-year old would be OK with these. YMMV

When I was 8 all I wanted to watch was old sci-fi: the Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, Lost in Space, Dr. Who, Star Trek (the original) - but all my friends thought I was nuts and couldn't stand the stuff.
My recomendation would be "The Incredible Mr. Limpet", an old movie from the 60s where the same guy that's Barney Fife in the Andy Griffith Show plays a guy who wants to become a fish, he eventually does and falls in love with a girl fish while helping track down German subs during WWII, a sweet movie. Once I got a really weird look from a checkout guy at a video store when I rented Mr. Limpet and The Exorcist at the same time.

I'm surprised that there was no mention of "Cars", "Over the Hedge", or "Antz".

OK, they're all animation, but they are good animation with well-written, funny-as-hail plots.

Guaranteed to entertain those from 2 to 92.

since I started this thread I thought I'd tell you how the "family day" went.

I'd hired a mini-bus kinda thing and took 12 of the family out for the day. Went on a dolphin-watch cruise first, then had a beachside bbq. Then went to a mountain lookout over the lake, then to the cremation plots of great grandparents that most of us hadn't seen before. Then to may parent house (they were with us) to watch the Family Movie recommended here on AK (opted for The Rocketeer). Unfortunately, there was a soccer game on tv that most of them wanted to see so the movie didn't get a showing :dammit:

I watched it the next night by myself :D :beerchug:
