View Full Version : Anybody remember my RCA Victor 6T74?

Well, after many months of hard work, several mis fires, a few shorts, etc..., here is the latest on it.
Tosay,, connected my test picture tube, speaker, etc., sired her up, and plugged into variac.
The good news is I got good sound reception on channel 3 with a 3' lenghth of wire.
The bad news is No hv, no vert. Sweep,
And, maybe, no boost.
I think this has something to do with when someone kept popping fuses, and put a 10 A fuse in it. Me thinks something significan't has been dammaged.
That's all I know on it now.

That don't sound to good , Is that the set that was made in 1950 thay you were working on ?
How many secondary outputs on the power transformer ?
Is it just a 6.3 filiment voltage and a B+ ? or are there other outputs ?
What Im wondering if it could be possible that there is a power resistor that has died , or the ohms reading is to high ?
Sounds like the B+ is OK for the RF IF and sound circuits , but not there for the oscillators or the deflection .
I hope you get it sraightened out :thmbsp:

I would check for B+ voltage through the damper tube and flyback...remove the top cap from horiz output tube and carefully connect the voltmeter to the disconnected cap lead. If the flyback/damper are passing voltage there should be the B+ voltage present there and this means these components are likely OK.
If this checks out then check for a signal from the horizontal oscillator, check negative grid voltage at the HO tube and plate voltage at the oscillator tube etc. Also there is usually a damper fuse in this age of set so make sure that is OK too.
The horizontal output stage/flyback need to be working to develop the boost voltage.

Bill Cahill

Been there, done that. Flyback checked shorted on flyback checker. I found one that barely checks in the green. I need a new flyback. Anyone got a new Fly 45 they can spare???
I simply replaced bad dampter winding with a new hv insulation 6.3 volt, 1.2 A transformer someone kindly gave me.
All B+ resistors check good. I may also need a new yoike for this set.
They used this set to death. Right into the ground.
Out of 21 tubes, I also had to replace 10 tubes, and picture tube...
I did get audio reception this week on 3' of wire. Channels 3,and,something on 12 came in.

I think this has something to do with when someone kept popping fuses, and put a 10 A fuse in it.

What?!

One does not solve the problem of blowing fuses by putting in a higher rated fuse. :nono:

Hi Bill
Moyer has a FLY-45. I've taken alittle break from my KCS-47A It's running with a few problems. Even though It's very watchable with a good picture. But will get back to it after the new year. Btw did you get that volume/tone control out for me?

I have to check. I just found out they burned the tone control in mine. I'm beginning to think this set wasn't worth fixing. I'm not quiting after all I've done, but, if the truth be known, I'd say this one was totallly junk. I think 60.00 price was 55.00 too much..
Anyone have opiniions?

 Since I found my small supply of 1,000 volt silver mica caps, I am going to play it safe, and, also replace micas in horiz. osc., and, on sync amplifier. It don't hurt. I'm finding more, and more micas failing in this old stuff....
I'll begin this project tommorrow.

Moyer charged me 45.00 for that flyback. What am I? Crazy????
Yes!
I found one that checks barely in the green, and, I'm trying it first. But, I'm replacing the mica caps, first....
Wish me luck.

Polaraman, I'm not giving up. This set will play if it kills me, and, it might......:tears:

Bill,

I have that exact same set that I picked up in the summer. The cabinet is a little different on the doors but otherwise, the same model.

If nothing else, your adventure with yours will serve as an invaluable educational tool to those like myself who have yet to dig into their version of this set.

Here's the latest on it...
Well, after replacing the 1B3 yesterday, which checked good, I got full hv.
I now have a bright horiz. white line accross the screen.
No vertical sweep, however....
Sound died again.
I am getting two channels for sure, as I can see movement in the line. People movement, that is.
Horiz. osc. is still un stable, but, I want my vert. back first....
May just be adjustment problems on horiz. osc....
I'm going to work oon vertical problem today....
I have a new yoke in it....
I'll post pictures when I get something more interesting than just a white line.

Dosent look like you have much verticle amplitude. Have you unhooked one lead of the primary and one lead of the secondary, on the verticle oscilator blocking transformer and measured the DC ohms resistance. If either the primary or secondary on the verticle oscilator blocking trans is open, you will not get the correct signal to drive the vertical output tube which in turn drives the vertical output trans.

What do the waveforms look like going into the grid of the vertical output tube? are they the correct shape and amplitude?

Remember your scope knows all and tells all!

It could just be a bad or incorrect connection of the new yoke's vertical coils to the vertical circuits.

Be sure you don't run the set with much brightness without any vertical. Else you could burn a line in the phosper of the CRT.

My 721ts has this sort of problem with the vertical. Neither of the vert transformers test bad with the ohmeter. I've been through that circuit up one side and down the other 20 times and I still can't manage to trace it down. I can get sweep with an external source or by jumping a cap from filament to grid. I'm thinking of getting a new osc transformer just to eliminate it.

Bill Cahill
02-02-2008, 09:48 PM
The primary resistance on the blocking transformer should be about 135 ohms, and, secondary, about 1 K ohms.

Check your vertical centering control. If that goes bad, you could also lose your vertical, and, that's a special 4 watt tapped pot.

It seems like that pot had burnt out (too much current going somewhere) and I subbed in some wirewound resistors. Lots of screwy stuff going on in that set. I'm in no hurry to dig back into it!

Man , this reminds me of the fun I was last having with a 1955 General Electric utravision , which I still have to finish :tears:. It seems like when there was a change in the horizional frequency , it was also causing the vertical line to change . Is your RCA doing this ?
Bill , how is your horiziontal ? does it drop off to a lower frequency ?
Mine was constantly fluxuating from almost the correct freq to was below .
It was very intermittend , almost like a loose connection , or dirty tube socket ect. ect..
I have been over this set and still it causes me the same problems , except with slightly better vertical than you have right now .
Have you checked the resistors in the vertical oscillator ?
Also being that it effects both horizontal and vertical , Could it be in the sync circuit , and the vertical and horizontal oscillator circuits are being effected by a problem in there ? :scratch2:

Interesting , Hang in there Bill , one of these day your going to get it . :thmbsp:

Bill Cahill

Vertical problem was caused by an open vertical oscilator transformer.
Unfortunately, following the same color codes for putting in new one proved a bad idea.
New one is normal. Red-Blue. Primary.
Green -Yellow, Secondary.

Then I found out from schematic RCA was goofy.
Green-Yellow, Primary
Red-Blue, secondary.

Had to have chassis at odd angle to replace trasformer. It slipped, and nearly fell on floor.
I grabbed it with both hands, and, saved it.
However, two tubes got knocked out with severely bent pins, fixed that, and, it broke the adjustment core in last video I F transformer.I now have to replace that!:tears::sigh::no::nono::thumbsdn:

I think this set doesn't like me.....:tears:

Reminds me of that one Bugs Bunny / Yosimite Sam episode:

"I wonder if he's stubborn enough to open all those doors?"

BOOM!!

"Yep, he's stubborn enough!"

I don't think too many people would have been stubborn enough to finish that TV. you went past my stubbornness level months ago. I admire your tenacity and there's a lesson here for the world. I suspect success is closer than you think.

But - Not giving up is not the same as working way past when you should call it a day. Then you do things like miswire things, drop chassis, etc. Know when to say when, it will still be there tomorrow, nobody is going to take it away. Mike will make sure of that.

This TV of Bill's is well on its way to becoming one of the most famous ones in American history.

I am real tempted to buy this piece of history from Bill when he gets it playing just like a new one. He's just a short drive over the long bridge from me.

Found at least one reason for popping Two resistors in horiz. output circuit were crossing each other. Looks like it happenned from all the mis handling over it's moving, etc.
Still may not have a good flyback in it. I had also been getting alot of corona, and, hv arcing. It appears the donut is failing. I now have a brand new flyback for it.
I think the reason vert. is still not running is because I have to reverse two wires on winding of vert. oscilator transformer. That should bring vertical back.
I accidentally destroyed the 4th video if transformer when chassis nearly fell on the floor. Replaced that. Set's working again, getting better reception than before.
If I can solve the popping, hv problem, vertical problem, and do re tuning, minor issue, I should have set working like new. Then, I'll be able to put it back together, and finnish final adjustments on its' own tube.
I now have put the original family table lamp on top of the set.
I'll get a picture of that.

On yoke, this is an exact replacement RCA yoke. It plugs in to a socket on the side of hv cage.
I have now had to replace 15 out of 21 tubes....
I replaced bhe IF transformer I accidentally broke when chassis fell. It's fine. It actually plays better.

John Folsom met him yesterday, and, ended up falling in love with him. Not hard considering hwo good Mike is.......

Now, on the tv.
John has given me alot of help on the last stumbling areas of the set, and, it looks like with some additional mods., the set will soon play again.
Unfortunately, this includes disconnecting the cathode from the filament of the orig. 6W4 damper socket, and, changing tube to a 6AU4. My new old stock 3,000 volt filament transformer failed, and, was arcing, and, blowing fuses.
Thank you very much for your help John. I look forward to getting it back playing soon.

I'd trust it. I mean, it's half new parts at this point. It should be fine. Use it, enjoy it. I mean, what's the point in spending time and effort fixing something if you're not going to use it once it works? (Well, besides the fact that fixing things is fun). If you're just going to let it sit and never turn it on, then it might as well be broken like it was when you found it.

And, you probably have the circuit memorized at this point anyway. It will be easy to fix should something break. It should last for a good long time, and in the meantime, keep your eyes open for spare parts or parts chassis.

Use it!

John Folsom reports in e mails to me he has neatenned up connections by me, someone else, and, company.
Mistakes were made by all, especially me.
He had problems with it also.
Couple nights ago it went with a bang, and, flamed out two resistors.
My 3KV insulation, new old stock fil. transformer for damper failed. It was arcing internally.
He showed me pictures of it playing last night. I don't like the coarseness of the picture, however.
It still has other issues, as well.
He's going to align it today.
Still think something else is wrong.
Anyway, it's progress. Thanks, John.

Well, I bit the bullet, and, stripped, and, lightly sanded the entire top portion of upper moding all the way around, which had extensive dammage. Just put on the first coat of stain on top edge of cabinet. I used special walnut. That got the depth of color correct. Now, when it dries , I'll rub in deep mahoganny to get the color correct.
When dried, and, I am satisfied, I will start putiing on the lacquer...
I may also do the outside edges of the doors, which also have extensive dammage. The case had a deep dent on the right front corner of the molding. I was able to do a decent repair on that . I need, however, to pick up some colorable patching compound filler to fill in a gouge gap.....

I have almost decided to also re finnish the top front portion of the large molding on bottom front. The front also is dammaged, but not deeply enough to re do it.
Besides, the decal there is mint, and, I want to save that.

I made a simple base on heavy castors for it yesterday, and, have put it above that. It's now 4" above the floor.
However, I wish to get a wider board. It's not wide enough, and, cabinet likes to teeter, which is not acceptable. I have it safe now, but, I still need a better board.

I will be using lacquer on it as the final finnish, as the original finnish was...
It will take time, but, it will look nicer.

Well, this next week I hope to get the tv done. I just finnished doing the finnishing on top edges of cabinet. Still working on the doors, and, want to work on top section of bottom front molding. Doing some repairs to dammage UPS did shipping repaired chassis back.
Will be soon trying it on bench, and, doing final adjustments, etc.. Then, I'll put set back in its' cabinet, and do final mechanical adjustments..
I will post pictures when done....
