I was mightily impressed by Kevin Spacey playing Bobby Darin In "Beyond the Sea" and by his singing (I just got the soundtrack CD.)

Another one I enjoyed was Meryl Streep in "Postcards From the Edge" where, at the very end she kicks out the jams on "Checking Out of This Heartbreak Hotel"; she has a great bluesy country voice.

So, what performances by actors who "don't normally sing" do you like? (Horrific examples are good too :D)

Maggie Gyllenhaal did a couple of nice songs in the movie "Happy Endings" that it made it to the soundtrack. She has a sweet voice, and sings like she really enjoys the songs...

Dennis Quaid did a great job singing "Closer to You" (which he also wrote) in the "Big Easy"

Tony Perkins made a couple of jazz vocal albums. I have one and it isn't too bad. Sissy Spacek in Coalminer's daughter also comes to mind.

Clint Eastwood managed to destroy a fair number of country songs in the movie "Honkey Tonk Man," although the movie wasn't too awful otherwise.

He was also accused of singing in the Western musical "Paint Your Wagon," but he was a young man and can be forgiven on account of his brains hadn't grown in yet.

For actors singing, John Goodman can do a pretty good blues tune. He did a great rendition of "Feelin' Alright" on (don't laugh) the Muppet Show when it was resurrected as "Muppets Tonight". I saw Blues Brothers 2000 but don't really remember how he did in that one.

For singers acting, Harry Connick Jr. has turned in a few good roles. Independence Day comes to mind as well as...errrr...the thriller he did with Sigourney Weaver...hang on, IMDB consult...Copycat.

I was impressed with Meryl's singing in the Prairie Home Companion movie. Audrey Hepburn handled Moon River pretty well.

Lee Marvin's warbling on "I was Born Under a Wandering Star" from Paint Your Wagon is frequently in my play pile. Clint Eastwood is also a pretty fair jazz pianist.

Not sure how to classify Phil Harris as to actor or singer, but his "That's What I Like About the South" album and voice work for the bear in the movie Jungle Book (sings Bear Necessities) are both great. Louie Prima does some swinging in the movie also......

Tex Ritter for "High Noon" and "Cigarettes and Whisky and Wild Wild Women" among others.

Funny you mention that, I was watching parts of a Dick Cavett show rockstar boxed set a few days ago which included an appearance by Tex and he gave an inspired performance of that song. Not bad for an old cowboy. That boxed set was something of a revelation for me having been born after the show was off the air. I highly recommend it. Janis Joplin is on it several times and gives fairly Awesome performances along with great interplay between her and Cavett. Also there is Bowie, George Harrison, Stevie Wonder, and Paul Simon. The Woodstock show is priceless. Joni Mitchell is magic.

SMGellar (Buffy), Anthony Head (Giles), Emma Caulfield (Anya), Amber Benson (Tara), and especially James Marsters (Spike) all did outstanding work. Marsters' 'Let Me Rest in Peace' is unforgettable.
