I just saw Im Not There the other night.Its a rather demented biopic of Bob Dylan from around the late fifties to the early 80's.Todd Haynes took what I consider a very clever approach to the problem:He has five or six different actors play characters that represent Dylan at different stages,or different personas.Nothing is linear,and no mention is actually made of Dylan.All the characters have different names and different stations in life.But if you are a Dylan fan,a lot of the scenes in this movie will bring back memories,and some of the scenes really nail it.
All of the actors give fine performances,and one in particular is absolutely stunning.Cate Blanchett IS Dylan in 65-66.After seeing her in Elizabeth:The Golden Age and in the Aviator as Kate Hepburn,I belive this woman can do anything.
The music fits amazingly well,even if some of the songs are performed at times different from when they were created.The best example is the scene where the young African American kid,"Woody Guthrie",is playing Tombstone Blues in a blues style with two other musicians.
If you love Dylan,it might be worth it to check it out,even if its more of a puzzle than a coherent piece of filmaking.
