I have a 36 inch zenith tv which i purchased new in 1997 . Gave it to my brother a few years back . Anyway it recently developed a problem , it wont turn on with button or remote . I took the back cover off and there is a soldered in fuse which is blown . I attempted to momentarily jump it and found there is a short in the set which blew the fuse . I dont have much experience with these newer sets being mainly just fooled with older tube sets and radios my whole life . Can anyone chime in and give me any advise on this issue .

If it's anything like what happens in the power supplies of a lot of larger CRT sets, it's not just the fuse. Something on down the line is shorting. On your particular set, I wouldn't know for sure. The best way to find out is to follow the solder traces on the underside of the board that connect to the fuse. If you have a multimeter, you can test the components in that path to see if there's a problem. BTW, a soldered-in fuse on a 36" set from any company is strange. :scratch2: Is it another fuse besides the main power fuse?

i did already realize that there was a short in the set . I only saw one fuse but i will take another look .

Is your chassis a single board chassis with the fuse in the front right hand corner (viewed from rear of set)? It could be one or more diodes in the bridge rectifier network (there are four). If the set uses an STR53041 regulator; it could be shorted. It's a 5 legged device on a heatsink. If it's shorted, there is probably a transistor and some resistors around the regulator that are also bad. You'll also want to change any electrolytic caps in the regulator circuit. If you've got the model number, I'll see if I have a diagram for that set. The module number (9-XXXX) would be nice, too.

Post the model number - I'll gladly post a link to the service manual. I've got 1996-present Zenith service manuals on disk. Question is, A-line or Z-line?

You could try googling the model and chassis number, see if you find anything.

www.tvmodule.com has the 9-1813 for $78.95. If the model number of the TV is still on the back of the set; please post it and I'll see if I have a diagram on it. Then, you may can fix it without having to buy the whole board.

after a good look at the chassis , last night , i found the horizontal output transister is shorted , as well as a few caps that it must have took with it . I called tv modules.com and they rebuild the old module , bench test it for a day and warrenty it . So for 78 bucks , it does not pay for me to fool with it, being its a tv thats used daily by my sister-inlaw, i am going that route.

That may be the best route because there's a good chance that the flyback is bad. If that's the case, it would cost more for you to fix than it would to send it off for repair.
