Yesterday at a thrift store I saw a tv with 3 crt's and I keep wondering if was fairly common or maybe I should go back and buy it. It had one large crt, probably about 19" and to the right there were two smaller crt's, probably around 5". There were three front mounted controls under each of the smaller crt's, I think for horizontal hold, vertical hold, and brightness but not positive. I could not see any indication of brand or model and could not see the back of the set. I'm kind of wishing I had taken the time to pull it out to see if there were any markings.

Not much to go on I know but what the heck, can't hurt to ask...

There was also an Akai combination reel to reel/8 track there that didn't look too bad.

Price was $20 for each item. I had a difficult time keeping my money but I figured I have enough junk already...

Here in Europe, we had the 1978 Nordmende Spectra SK2 Studio, a four-screen TV... it had a 26 inch color screen and 3 smaller B/W CRTs under the main screen... they were horribly expensive back then and are of course horribily rare now...

It's probably a Sampo. They pop up from time to time on ebay. If it was closer, I'd offer you a $100 to pick up the set, and I'd drive over to get it, but the drive from NJ (with gas what it is), really won't pay :D

That Sampo sure does look like it. Maybe I'll go back tomorrow and see if it's still there. I don't know of any reasonable way to get it to NJ though.

That has to be the most overboard piece of electronics ever made. I'm old fashioned i thought that PIP was a lazy man's feature. but 2 extra screens. Wow! i want one just for the OMG factor. one day they will priceless!

Well I went back and bought the set today. I figured for $19.99 I couldn't go too wrong... It's a bit rough around the edges, but it works. It's an interesting unit for sure. The best thing about it is that the few people I've shown it to so far had never seen anything like it. It's definitely a fun unit to show.

In that era, there were as many screens as there were programs broadcast (i.e. 3 state-controlled channels).

I've had a few of those Sampo Tri-Screen sets... I would think they will be collectable some day, but the last one I had was sold for about $60 in mint condition working, with new-in-box original special remote for it.

I can well remember seeing a similiar set show up as a frequent prize on The Price is Right, c. early 80s. I seem to remember that set being an Hitachi. That, and they always had Colortyme consoles which struck me as odd because we didn't have them around here back then.

Well, in an 1982 "Spegiel" catalogue there was an "Sampoo" with one main color C.R.T. and 2 small B & W C.R.T.'s (the tv looked almost like that one in the 1st post). On the main C.R.T. was displayed an color tv broadcasting, and on the 2 small ones an image of an baby in a bad and an image of the entrace to the house. So, I guess those 2 small B & W C.R.T.'s where diseigned for C.C.T. survailance, but as other images are "saying" you could watch 2-3 tv broadcasting in one moment.

I'm guessing that was a "Sampo". I don't guess I've ever seen any of their stuff around here. I remember in the late 70s/early 80s a place called Belmont up around DC or Baltimore would advertise quite a bit and Sampo seemed to be their low-cost line. The name always sounded to me like a cheap version of Sanyo or Samsung which I didn't take as a good thing!

I've seen a few regular Sampo sets around here. I think they were about as good as any other cheap TV of the time. I've seen a few TG&Y store brand sets that were built by Sampo in the late '70's and some of those would still be going after 20+ years. Some of the '80's Sampo's I found had blown up flybacks. Just like the GoldStar and Samsung sets of the '80's.

For some reason, I thought it would be a 19" table top set. Looks to be a 25" console - that's actually rather impressive (and over the top!) Maybe some rough edges, as you say - but a heckuva buy for 20 bucks!

Actually the color tube is about 19" or 20" and the two small tubes are 5". The small screens each have their own tuner and can run off the main antenna or one or both of them can be used as monitors with their own separate video inputs.

I think it was a big hole in the water by the Nordmende, I have seen only one. In a window of a shop selling color TV. the spectra sk2 color deluxe study is only a toy expensive and heavy. in practice not used to anything the presence of 3 small screen in B & W. to hear them would be used to monitor other TV programs while you were watching the main color on the screen. It was a beautiful mirror for birds. in adversiting reads: <<a TV designed for the professional who needs to be constantly informed about the various programmes, the color TV is a tool for the journalist, politician, the professional who must be constantly updated and always throughout .... ... but also for most avid viewers here and dissatisfied by having to follow a single program at a time>> you imagine 4 videos contemporaries but especially 4 audio simultameamente listen! that big brick! Indeed in the photo you see off!

Sampo is a Taiwanese manufacturer but most of the parts should come from South Korea and Japan.

I have a Sampo 5" color "all-in-one"-TV, Radio, & cassette-& the build quality sorta leaves a LOT to be desired. Still works-for the most part. IIRC, it was made in '81.
