I use a 35 watt microwave oven type appliance light bulb in my Lava Lamp clones. After they heat up really good, they usually blurble just fine. I have an older, "real" Lava Lamp (also a dump find) that uses a standard incandescent bulb and it blurbles (three uses; I think we've just coined a neologism-- a new word!) just fine.
