I received one of those little Arvins a few days ago and recapped it this morning. The set turned out really nice. The original painted finish is quite good especially the painted woodgrain on the front.

The reason I have the water bottle next to the picture of the TV is to show how small it really is. The stand alone set looks like a standard size TV but it actually has an 8 inch screen. It is not electrostatic deflection but has a yoke. The 8AP4 is a metal tube that was not used in too many TVs.

The set was complete except for the HV cage cover which John Folsom is generously sending me from a parts set.

Nice TV , is the cabinet bakelite or metal ?

Is this the only set to use an 8" magnetically deflected tube?

That looks great! I've seen a few of those cute little metal Arvins, but none in nearly as nice shape.

I don't know of any other sets that used that CRT (aside from the rebadged version of that same set that Sears offered under their Silvertone label).

Those are one of the cutest sets... I've had a few of them, but none with good CRTs. Is it yours or a restoration customer?

I just realized it has a (rather massive looking) power transformer, unusual for what must have been a budget set at the time!

It is really a well built and designed set. It has, as you noticed, a transformer power suppy, 3 IF stages and DC restoration. Right now it is hard to see the picture as the smoke here in Thousand Oaks is pretty thick from all the surrounding brush fires!

Here is the only other set I know which uses the 8AP4 CRT. It was made by Arvin, and marketed in the Detroit area for hospital use, and is branded as a HOSPIX. It is the same set as the Arvin 4080T, in a slightly different paint scheme. In addition, it Has a toggle switch and headphone jack for private listening.

Steve called me during his restoration of his Arvin, and to compare performance, I got my Arvin down from the top of the TV pile where it lives, and fired it up. I restored this set some years ago, and now it no longer wanted to lock horizontally. So I pulled it apart and replaced a couple of tubes and an NOS replacement electrolytic which was now running on the hot side. It is now back to operating properly. The 3 chassis photos are of the Arvin chassis. The little 8AP4 really is a cute CRT. This set uses a 6AV5 horizontal output tube, which has no plate cap! Most unusual, just like the rest of the set.

i have one of those little arvins with a good crt. probley will list on ebay in the next couple months. done a full recap but could not get the horizontal to lock in. steve
