Thanks to Heathkit tv, I got in touch with a fellow in North Royalton Ohio that had this 2001 for sale cheap!
It has all the manuals, Optional Heathkit cabinet and clock. Heck, It even works too!
Evidently, The original owner was never able to get it to work so it sat nearly 20 years. Jim (the person I purchased it from) Bought it from him and finished the assembly and did some minor repairs (wiring errors) to it.
All in all, A very nice set with extremely low hours.

I read in an old newsgroup post somewhere (found thru Google's archives) that one particular person was pretty much berating the Heathkit transistor color TV's as having "an absolutely miserable picture, and was unreliable." Someone else popped off about how hard they were to align (or even get close). Well, you know what they say about opinions and belly buttons.....

Another person related a story of a Heath engineer having told him the tube sets were superior because Heath "stole" IF-strip designs from communications receivers. Who knew?

Anyway, one thing I am pretty sure is true is that these sets do sometimes exhibit power supply problems. There's also a diode trio that's prone to pop too. They used a fairly common RCA tube so that shouldn't be much of a problem.

The 2001 set was the first to use a direct access pushbutton tuner (AFAIK) and is supposedly better than the previous up and down buttons.

Found this fellow Alex Crinzi [email protected] on an old NG, don't know anything about him or if his addy is even valid any longer, but he said he has many parts for Heath TV's

Actually, The set works great with no problems whatsoever!
Jim repaired it and did all the alignments prior to me picking it up.
He just had no room for it anymore.
The problem it had when he got it was "dead set" and stayed that way 20 years shoved in a closet.

Heathkit had the GR-2001 RCA had the G-2000 I suppose this was to make them sound "Futuristic" :p:
Now that we've gone past that date I guess they will have to be "Retro" instead. :lmao:

Yes, They tried to make the sets sound real cool by using 2000 or 2001, Guess they thought it would make up for the high price!
I was in high school in the late seventies and could in no way afford a GR-2001 when new. Heck, Even the optional cabinet was beyond my financial reach! I did enjoy building one at the time for a friend of the family but that was as close to owning one that I got.
At the time, You could buy an RCA or Zenith new fully built with cabinet for less than the basic 2001.
That still didn't change my desire to obtain one, Even years later!
I guess there is something I enjoyed about building one from a kit.
I used to go to the store on 8 mile to purchase test equipment kits and always would stop by the tv display and try to figure how I could afford it!

I built a Heathkit GR 2001 as part of a National Technical School training course and completed it in 1979. Mounted it in a nice Heathkit console. (pictures avaialbe on request) The TV worked great. Fortunately, or unfortunately when you build a TV yourself, and have all the manuals, schematics and the diagnostic meter they give you, each time you have a problem one can generally fix it with a $0.99 part from Radio Shack. Somebody mentioned in a previous post, that these sets had a problem with the high voltage, it was usually a transistor that controlled the vertical height. When mine went out for the third time in the early 90's I used it as an opportunity to convience my wife to buy a 32 inch set and have kept the GR 2001 in my barn since. I really need to clean out my barn, but hate the idea of watching it crushed in a landfill. Too much love and sweat went into it. Anybody interested I'll deliver it to a 100 mile radius of the Sacramento, CA Area. Others will have to make some other arraingments. You will get the GR 2001 with the original remote control, assembly instructions and trouble shooting manuals, and a Zennith MTS stereo decoder. As Zennith developed the standard for stereo, and the GR 2001 was the first set to take advantage of it, I purchased this set top box to enhance the system.

I have a GR-2050 21" Heathkit that I built back in 1976. It took me a week to build it and worked from day one. I have only had two problems with it, a power resistor on either the hoizontal or vertical output board. It was a 5W and is now a 20W. The other problem was with the Hight Voltage section. I sent it back to Heath for repair and they fixed it by mounting two large power resistors on the back of the PC board so get some airflow. (they were mounted just above the HV cage and had no airflow.)

I bought a GR02001 from a guy who took a course and coudn't get it to work. I went over the TV completely and fixed several problems. The picture tube was severly burned across the front due to alignment procedures. I junked the case but I have all the boards and back chassis for some spare parts.
