Who used N.T.S.C. 4.43, besides the ones who used C.C.Tv (Close Circuit Television)? Some one ever seen an home V.H.S. tape recorded in N.T.S.C 4.43?

I don't think any country used NTSC at 4.43Mhz. But some CCTV and consumer equipment could produce it. Back about 10 years ago I worked for Samsung, developing a TV decoder chip that would do NTSC, PAL, and SECAM. It would identify automatically what standard was being received, and adjust itself accordingly. It could do NTSC at 4.43 if it ever saw it.

I think some country in South America does PAL with a subcarrier near 3.58MHz.

NTSC 4.43 is produced by some PAL VCRs that have an NTSC playback function. It's cheaper to build than a true multisystem VCR and most multisystem TV's (and some PAL only sets) will display it.

I know that no country used for television N.T.S.C. 4.43
Cuba now it's using SECAM :D
But anyone ever seen an N.T.S.C 4.43 tape? :scratch2:

I don't think there can be an NTSC 4.43 tape as the it is outputted by such VCRs when playing back any NTSC tape. The same tape played on an NTSC VCR would output standard NTSC 3.58. These VCRs can play back an NTSC tape, but they can't record NTSC (4.43 or 3.58).

I once bought an NTSC VHS tape of a TV series that I couldn't find in PAL. On my PAL VCR this played back as NTSC 4.43. This displayed fine, but I could not record it. None of the VCRs I tried would lock onto the signal. The video capture card I had in the PC could sync to the video (as it could handle NTSC), but couldn't handle the different subcarrier.

I had a frustrating problem with a customer several years ago... He brought in a Sony 20" multisystem TV with the complaint "no color". I fooled with it (no schematic available), and I couldn't figure out what was going on with it. It had PAL, SECAM, and NTSC. What I didn't notice at first was that the NTSC was 4.43 and no provision for NTSC with 3.58 mc color, which of course explains why no color. He had bought it in Zimbabwe, Africa while on a religious mission, and brought it home. He was told when he bought it that it would work in the USA, but sadly, no. So maybe some small African countries use 4.43?????

Zimbawe uses P.A.L. Problably is an "Sony" made for Europe, where we use both P.A.L. and SECAM. N.T.S.C. 4.43 is olnly for play-back mode.

I know heard of people from Romania who bought tv's from U.S.A. and after that found that they couldn't use them here... :(

PAL with 525 line 60 Hz scanning and 3.58 MHz color is called "PAL-M" and is used in Brazil. Gives them unnecessarily expensive TVs because no one else uses that combination.

The VHS tape itself is not 4.43 or 3.58, since the color is recorded at a much lower frequency (this is called "color under", since it is under the FM video carrier of the luminance). If that lower frequency is the same for PAL and NTSC VCRs (I'm not sure of that), then it would make sense that a VCR that is built for a PAL country could convert the color under frequency to 4.43 NTSC.

I believe this is not technically what is generally known as NTSC 4.43. It is 525 60 Hz with PAL 4.43 color. Even an old PAL only TV will display this in color, but you have to adjust the vertical hold. The reason you can't record this on a PAL VCR is because it's 525 60Hz instead of 625 50Hz. You need a VCR with a standards converter if you want to convert a tape to PAL.

NTSC 4.43 is 525 60Hz with NTSC color encoding, but with the color subcarrier at 4.43 MHz.

There is no such thing as an NTSC 4.43 tape. I just confirmed this with my miltistandard VCR. A recording made in NTSC, or NTSC 4.43 is identical.

I had a Sony PVM-1270 that was PAL, SECAM. NTSC 4.43. With some help from the local branch of Sony, I simply changed the reference crystal and did some twiddling to make it work on '3.58.

Don't know if it made the PAL mode inoperable though.

I really miss that monitor...

That's interesting. The PVM-1270's I've seen all supported both kinds of NTSC.

VCRs that playback NTSC tapes as PAL 60 came later. The earlier decks output it as NTSC 4.43.

Some jungle ICs (usually found in cheaper TVs from the early 90s or so) can decode PAL or NTSC, but can only handle one subcarrier. The PAL model gets a 4.43MHz crystal and can display NTSC 4.43. The NTSC model gets a 3.58MHz crystal and can probably handle PAL-M.

I've yet to see a true multisystem jungle IC that handles PAL, NTSC and SECAM. The few SECAM capable sets that I have seen use a seperate IC for SECAM.

Another non-standard NTSC variant is produced by some "international" model Apple ][e computers. I don't remember what the subcarrier was, but it wasn't 3.58MHz and I don't think it was 4.43MHz either. I do remember I had to change the crystal in the monitor to 3.58MHz to get to play my NTSC 3DO games in color (back then I didn't have any multistandard monitors/TVs). I think Apple just wanted to make sure people bought their monitor.

The 1270 I had only had PAL, Secam, and NTSC 4.43. The 1271 I worked on at the office had all 4 "systems" including both NTSC and NTSC 4.43.

It struck me as really odd at the time since I remembered the one I had before having 3 leds on the status panel for system, and I thought, why would they have made different models for what was supposed to be a multi system monitor.

Anyone have either one of these beasts for sale in the pacific northwest?
