I am wondering the value of my Sony Profeel component tv system. And how do you recommend I go about selling it -- AK classifieds? sell to a dealer? ebay? Cost of shipping would seem to be an issue -- especially for the monitor -- should I try to sell pieces separately? - or is it more valuable as a system?
Monitor: KX-2501A - good condition except for a small burn in upper left corner - visible depending on color of picture - from sitting too close to a speaker.
Tuner: VTX-1000r - excellent condition
Remote: RM - 705 - excellent condition
Speakers: SS-X10A - excellent condition

We were given this system as a gift - now willing to switch to digital - and just realizing that it has some value as a collectible.

The Profeels are great sets; possibly the best ever made. I have all of them in my collection; 3.7" KX-401, 12" KX-1211, 19" KX-1901, and 25" KX-2501 (rosewood cabinet version), both tuners (VTX-1000 and 1100), and 3 types of original speakers.

Unfortunately for anyone wanting to put one for sale, I paid less than $25 for any of them in good shape, and two of the monitors I got on eBay for $1 and $9 in perfect shape. I don't understand why the price hasn't gone up a little better than that, especially since there have been many discussions on this forum on how great these sets are.

So I guess we're going to have to keep them awhile longer if we want to see a fair sale price.

Unfortunately those are very old non hdtv sets. They are expensive to ship and expensive to throw away.

I saw this thread on the Sony Profeel, and since I have a Sony Profeel 25" monitor, I thought I'd jump in. It's still the main TV in the house, in this case, paired with the Luxman T-407 TV Tuner and Remote Control Center. I'm curious about the Sony TV Tuner. I remember when I bought the Luxman I bought it because I thought it had more features than the equivalent Sony, but now I'm curious about the Sony. Anyone care to explain the features on the Sony TV Tuner that was paired with the Profeels?

The first Profeel tuner was the VTX-1000R. It is cable-ready up to channel 36 (in the USA version), and it has three video inputs with stereo audio. It included a thick cable with a multi-pin DIN-style connectors that matches the connector on the Profeel monitors and allowed the tuner's remote control to operate both devices. That remote control is a nicely-designed wedge-styled unit intended to be operated while sitting on a table. The tuner has an MPX output jack and matching audio inputs intended for a later add-on TV stereo decoder, and one unique feature: a switch to select either intercarrier audio, or split carrier. In the split-carrier mode, its signal-to-noise ratio was extremely high compared to all other TV-sound devices of its time.

A later version of the tuner is the VTX-1100R. It is cable-ready up to channel 125, and the wedge-style remote control was replaced with an ordinary-looking one. It also did not have the inter/split switch, but had some other function on a switch on the back if I remember right. I think its channel display was green LEDs versus cyan fluorescent on the VTX-1000R. When this tuner was released, the MLV-1100 stereo decoder was also made available.

Others here may be able to add more details; I am only recalling the details of the tuners I had in the 1980's.

Sorry to abandon this thread, but I've been caught up in buying a new Sony HD TV (FWIW: Sony KDS 50A3000). I like it so well, I think I *might* be ready to give up the Sony 25" Profeel that I've had (and loved) since 1984.

I can't match your descriptions of the functions of the VTX-1000R and the VTX-to the Luxman T-407 very well. It does channel switch up to Ch 99. And it has served me extremely well as a TV and video switcher, allowing me to switch/send 5 signals (satellite, antenna, LD, DVD, VCR/DVR) to the Sony Profeel via one lone video connection. It also allows recording a copy to the VCR/DVR from any of these video sources. It has functioned just like an A/V pre-amp in my 2-channel A/V System. (I just wish I could afford it's equivalent in a pre-amp with HDMI, Component, S-video and composite connections, so I wouldn't have to run so many cables to the HD TV!)

And I'm going to keep on using it to switch between the LD, DVD, and VCR/DVR which will at least simplify connections to the new HD TV for these older SD components.
