I saw the special 29 years ago, I have the lp. I've mentioned it to people over the years, some have heard of it. None have seen it. I came 6 years before "Spinal Tap" and I remember it being genius.

I undertand the DVD is longer and has all the stuff they couldn't do on American TV.

I remember watching it at a friends house. Pretty funny stuff for a couple of Beatles/Monty Python fans.

I figured it would be in glorious mono. Too bad since the lp paid such close attention to how the different era Rutles songs should sound.

Number one has everything panned into one channel or the other and by the time you get tp "Doubleback Alley", Hi-Fi stereo.

Real noticable is how they got the drum sound right, especially on the later tracks. To bad they didn't actually do the songs.

"I am the Waitress", "WC Fields Forever", "Denny Lane".... classic stuff.

Did the Rutles' stuff ever get released on LaserDisk?

DVDs are nice, but I'm partial to LDs now, especially for this sort of dated stuff, when I can find them. [Call me weird if you must, but they are cheaper, more decorative, and more fun to collect. :D]

In the early 1980s, Innes was accused by one American Beatle fan of stealing unreleased Beatles tracks to use in the film; this was based on a recording of "Cheese And Onions" obtained by the fan which he believed to be by John Lennon. When the recording was played to Innes, he was amused to discover that it was actually his own demo of the song - a tribute to his skills as a parodist.

Got them both, watched them both, again, loved the first one, the sequal, "Can't buy me lunch" wasn't nearly as good. It's clear Idol didn't have the budget to do much.

The cd has tracks that weren't on the lp , the bluray looks great but all the filmed elements are phony widescreen or 16.9 , the video segments are 4.3 , it is stereo but I was disappointed they didn't leave the distortion in the sound for the Ed Sullivan performance because the distortion gives it more of an authentic feel.
Too bad they didn't include the video they did for Shang-ri-la , the aged Rutles sans Eric Idle did this when they released Archeology the second Rutles album for those who may not know that they did a second album in the late 90s and I have the lp lol
