Any truth to the claim here:

If so was it just the Silver ones that were MB gifts or?
These sets sure ain't "rare"

I think I've seen other silver-faced ones...Yeah, they're about as common as pig tracks...

I've got to call shenanigans on that one.
Sony would have exploited such a link like crazy and there would have been three point stars all over place.

Mercedes used Becker electronics in their vehicles AFAIK.

Reminds me of a rumor on how Sony got their name years ago and money from Shell gas..
or in other words,"SHELL OIL NEW YORK".. S.O.N.Y"

I'm with Sandy. Not all that uncommon.

Here's the skinny on that: The USA Mercedes dealers DID offer the silver-faced 5-303W as an option. But I don't think there was any actual tie between Sony and MBZ. I've seen one of the Mercedes USA ads for the set on eBay. As far as I know, all the silver faced ones are the MBZ edition. The others were gray plastic face.

But rare? About as rare as a 2007 Mc Donald's drinking straw.

Nah,

Sony, according to some friends of mine who are old time electronics techs means "Soon Only Not Yet"

You can still get new picture tubes for these sets from Video Display Corporation for $65.00 A good option if you have a mint condition example with a soft CRT. I may just get one for my 5-303W.
