Just heard on classic fm Mozart.

There is a whole range of classics from Mozart to Beethoven and many more one that keeps coming up, the most used is the little musical genius (Wolfgang “Amadeus” Mozart) “Piano Sonata no.11 in A major (K331) (300i) Third moment: “Alla Turca” by Wolfgang Mozart.

It’s a charming piece that heard on the end credits of The Truman Show and fits it very well with a pleasing delight.

So how many classical music ones have you heard in the movies not to mention Amadeus 1984 and even in space (Mozart) can be heard (Alien) 1979.:D

Woody Allen's "Crimes and Misdemeanors" used a Schubert string quartet (15?) very well.

I remember a French film "Monsiur Somebody" had a Brahms piano quintet (Opus 26?) as a central theme about unrequited love.

There's a lot of "drop the needle" type stuff (I want to say, mostly Tchaikovsky) in Woody Allen's Scoop. (I only know this because I saw it recently.) I think he did that in Match Point as well, but I'm not positive.

There's also a lot in A Clockwork Orange. And pretty much every other Kubrick film.

That’s was good find Holst “The Right Stuff” with “Holst the planets” Casino had a few classical ones in it as too “Cape Fear” “Die Hard” “Die Hard 2” the list is endless.

Or you could go with Wallace and Gromit "Curse of the Wererabbit" the greehouse scene with Venus from Holst "The Plants".

Quite a bit of opera music in the movies as well.

I was a customers location a few weeks ago and they had cable TV on the "Sopranos". Now I have never watched the sopranos but the music in one scene was from "Turandot".

I made that comment to my customer and he said he thought it was pretty but didn't understand it. I explained the song to him and let him hear another version of the song from my iPod. He was really amazed.

Most people's perception of opera comes from a Bugs Bunny cartoon. :D

I thought the Tallis Fantasia was the wrong choice for those scenes in Master and Commander, besides a century too new for the rest of the music, it was used in gloomy scenes.

Ligeti in Kubrick is a good call. I didn't figure that out until 95 when I bought some Ligeti albums used (minty) and became a fan.

Sleeping with the Enemy -- Symphony Fantastique, Berlioz (I believe)

Stanley Kubrick was a great classical music lover. All of his movies have interesting musical references, that I believe are intentional.

In "The Shining", the atmosphere is set up with Bartok´s masterpiece "Music for strings, percussion and celesta". In 2001, I recall the adagio from Gayaneh, by Katchaturian, the "Blue Danube" waltz by Johann Strauss, the opening with "Also sprach Zarathustra" by Richard Strauss and the most effective use of contemporary (just composed a few years before) classical music with "Lux Aeterna", "atmospheres" and "Lontano" by Ligeti. That thriggered my interest in his music actually! Of "Barry Lyndon" I recall the Corelli theme used by Rachmaninoff in his set of piano variations.

Also Ingmar Bergmann was a classical music lover, with many references to Bach´s music, like his suites for solo cello, for example in "Wild strawberries" and "Cries and whispers".

A very interesting performance of Night on the Bare Mountain, in Stokowsky´s own orchestration (not the usual Rimsky Korsakoff one or the now more familiar, brutal and genial composer´s own).

Probably it has been already mentioned, although it is film music composed by an oustanding composer:

"Alexander Nevsky" and "Ivan the Terrible" (2 parts), by Eisenstein with superb music composed by Prokofiev. My votes would be for these, as the best music ever written for films.

Also Ralph Waugham Williams composed great film music, as well as Arthur Honegger.

'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' classic episode 'Hush'; Giles plays 'Danse Macabre' at their what-are-we-dealing-with meeting.

I guess 'Allegro non Troppo' translates to 'Allegory done while tripping'.

X-Files pilot; the Senator has something playing in the background while interviewing Scully. The piece in question was launched in the Mariner satellite.

'L'Arlaseigne' (spelling?) played several times in the Prisoner episde 'Hammer into Anvil'.

ha ha - yeah, I think it's one of the Brandenburg concertos, but I forget which one. I get it right when I hear it, then Mulder takes a guess and gets it wrong, so I think "d-amn, I got it wrong." Then the guy corrects him and it turns out I was right all along. :D

I just saw Hannah and Her Sisters on AMC a week or so ago. That uses a Bach concerto in F minor I think it is, both within the story itself as they specifically listen to it on the TT, and then as a recurring motif throughout the movie. That was also in Diving Bell and the Butterfly. It's a really "pure" piece of music, somehow.

Trying to think of others offhand, but I'm so intimidated by Holst's list (no pun intended :D) that I can't come up with any.

Platoon featured Barber's Adagio, and I think that was in the Elephant Man, too. And speaking of Liszt that makes me think of Chopin for some reason, which makes me think of The Pianist, the movie about the piano player trying to survive the Holocaust.

Hillary and Jackie had a lot of Bach, as well as some Rachmaninoff and other stuff, and Rach makes me think of the Rach 3, as in "Shine." There was some opera in "Philadelphia," but I'm not really into opera so I don't know what it was.

In "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" there is a lot of music of Leos Janacek : some of the piano pieces of "On the Overgrown Path", the "Fairy tale" for cello and piano, the first string quartet ("intimate letters")

If I remember correctly, in "Crimes and misdemeanors" Schubert´s string quartet # 15 is employed

Manhattan has Rhapsody in Blue, if you count that as classical (I do).

Speaking of schubert, there was a really awful movie a few years ago with sigourney weaver called "death and the maiden," after the quartet of the same name.
