My Admiral set (model C2256 N) that I watch frequently went nuts tonite. ( its the one in my avatar) I turned it on and vertical and horizontal were both out of sync. Picture is not dim, audio is fine. I have read about high voltage reduction and such but an old tv repair book I have refers to a clipper. You think I am on the right track?

Does the tube chart show a Sync Separator tube?
That might be a good place to start, try wiggling around first to make sure it's seated (unplug set!)

Eric, tube chart shows sync sep & vert osc. tube V401 which is a 12AU7 tube. Did a continuity check on with 4,5, and 9 pins all check good on continuity.

Now, discovered sync disc tube v403 which is a 6AL5 tube to have continuity in pins 3 & 4. Tube was still cold after a test of tv. Hope that is it.

Tubes came via UPS today. I ordered 3 tubes that I suspected could be faulty. The one and only I did not check, cause it was a real pain to reach was the culprit. 3rd IF & SYNC. INV tube 6U8 was the bad one. Tested bad too once I took it out. Set works great now! My first actual tv repair,, gotta start somewhere. But I have a question, why does that tube have a metal shroud around it?

it has a shield to prevent detuning to surrounding electromagnetic interference.

plain and simple it keeps things stable by preventing the tube from picking up unwanted noise.

Glad you found the problem.
