I saw this film at a preview tonight, although I know in some parts of the country its already showing. The Namesake is based on a very good book, from what I hear.
After seeing so many films dumbed down over the years, its nice to see one with characters drawn in some depth, and following lives on not entirely predictible paths.
Basically, the story is a young man who's parents had an arranged marriage, and emigrated to the US from India, and how his embarrassment at their lack of assimilation into the American culture had changed the path of his life, and how everyones actions in a family effect everyone else. And its not the usual hollywood character arc of the insensitive son rediscovering his family, this is more complex than that.
I swear, after seeing this I wanted to get on the phone and call my parents.
A really satisfying film.
