I realize that this may not be the best forum for this question since this set is only a year old but perhaps one of you might have an idea as to what is going on with this set. Moderator, please feel free to move this thread if you deem it inappropriate to the forum.

I have had this set in my office for about 11 months since new. It has always powered up correctly. I rearranged the office and moved the set home. Now, every so often, when I turn the set on from cold, it will power up and then shut off. Sometimes immediately and sometimes after as much as 5 minutes of running.

The lamp is coming on, the fan is running and the color wheel is spinning (I hear all the motors whirring).

I really haven't a clue what to do with this set short of tolerate it til it dies and toss it.

Any ideas as to what might be causing this?

Any possibility the remote could be shutting it off on it's own? Maybe needs batteries?

My Sammy dlp was turning itself off after 10-15 minutes. Turn back on and it would turn off within 1 minute. I thought the lamp was over heating so I took the lamp out and looked inside but not much too see although I was able to see the edge of a squirrel cage fan. I was able to get my hand in there and spin it with my finger so that was the end of that as it looked like the back of the tv has to come off to get it out.

Went down to RS and got a 4" 120v fan and tie wrapped it to the vent (blowing out) where the lamp is and problem was solved.

Contacted Samsung and eventually they sent me a new tv. :thmbsp: Mine was only about 6 months old, however.

Even if you don't I would still call Samsung and raise hell, sometimes they will take care of you even if it's a little out of warranty.

If you get 3 blinking lights when it shuts off it's either a lamp or ballast problem.If no lights I bet it's in the power supply. I just changed one under warranty today for intermittent shutoff.We had tried the lamp previously because she had over 4,000 hours on it when I checked the service menu. She said there were no blinking lights after shutdown or fan warnings came up on the screen before shutdown. Think I found the problem with the old one.There's a thermistor that gets extremely hot soldered directly to the board in series with the incoming ac. The solder on the bottom was cooked and gray looking.The new power supply had those spacers that the leads go through and solder to the board like commonly found on high power resistors.They kinda looked like the solder connections found on Magnavox and others regular CRT tvs made in the 80s and 90s when they cheaped out and stopped using the spacers on the boards. As well as spacing the hot components from the board they act like a heatsink to help keep the heat from cooking the solder connection and pad.Magnavox and a lot of others CRT tvs were notorious for intermittents from the same thing. I did have one DLP with random shutoff but with only the timer/temp light blinking. That was a warped lamp door not hitting the interlock switch just right. It was sensitive to movement.

During "normal" operation, the lamp on mine stays on for 10 seconds or so after you turn the tv off. When it was shutting down on its own, however, the the lamp was going off immediately. Hence, my conclusion that the lamp was over heating. 99.9% luck.

Oh and on this job when she replaced the lamp it was just over a year old. Out of warranty. While Samsung didn't pay for the lamp replacement(It was out of warranty then and it was due for replacement with the hours on it) they gave her a special warranty extension to get her problem fixed when it started shutting off again a month later.

Well, interestingly enough, I had received the set this week, one year ago. The set probably only has about 200-400 hours or so on it max. It was just used for photo display for my clients and not a lot of that really.

I googled problems with samsung dlp sets and came up with a big ol blog of problems. Suggestions from re-seating the bulb to replacing the ballast to replacing the fan, color wheel and power supply.

When I got home yesterday, sure enough, the set would power up, lamp come on and poof, the set would shut right off. I tried it 4 or 5 times and it wouldn't stay on. Sometimes the three lights on the power switch would light up, sometimes just the red one on the bottom of the switch. Sometimes the lamp and red power lights would flash and I could do nothing until I unplugged the set and reapplied power.

For the heck of it, I re-seated the bulb and when I powered the set back up, it stayed on this time. The fan is running and the color wheel is running, I can hear them spinning up.

If it does it tonight I will call Samsung tomorrow. Ahh, modern technology.

Thinking very seriously of just tossing this set and getting the 34" Sony HD CRT set.

My new one's been fine but thanks for the tip re: reseat the lamp.

Well, surprise, surprise.

I fired up the set last night, twice and it came on perfectly. Interestingly, the picture seemed brighter than before. I don't know if that is the result of reseating the lamp or unplugging the tv.

We will see if it continues. I will keep you all posted. Thanks for the suggestions and the parts supplier website info. I am sure with a sammy, this will come in handy.:D
