I found this KV-8000 on eBay last month, and won it for $26... The seller had poor photos, showing an awful picture that looked like a bad CRT. PLUS, they said nothing about the condition of the set physically.

So I bid on it, thinking it would be better than not having one at all, even though it appeared to be in mediocre shape. Today it came, and SURPRISE OF THE BEST KIND!!! The TV is in 100% flawless, out-of-the store mint condition! And the CRT is also like new. Original cord with original warning tag on it! The seller said it was an estate sale item.

The KV-8000 is very rare, at least with my experience. I've never owned one, and I have owned literally 1000 or more Sony sets including at least 25 KV-5000s. Also I worked for a Sony authorized repair shop in the 80s, and only ever saw about 3 of them. This is compared to dozens of KV-5000s (the little 5" brother to this set.)

Anyway, I am sure happy tonight :banana:

I had no idea this was a rare set. Have two of them, One is a monitor with rca jacks for the video and audio. Neat sets and the crts are in good shape.
Been watching the one in the picture.

The KV1722 Has one of the best color pictures I have ever seen.
Had one in my store and I sold it for $100.00. That was alot of money to get for a small screen set with a knob tuner when I sold it in the late 90's.
Never should have done that. So cool looking.
Something is up with the picture, The blue in the crt looks weak.
The background of his room in the picture looks too blue and makes me think they fooled with the white balance in the camera. May be wrong but still double check if you buy it and have them send you more pictures of it.

I hate my past mistakes, back somewhere around 1991 at the Miami Hamfest there was a seller who had dozens of these 8000's for sale for $35.00 each, or four for $100.00. They were used in patient rooms at Baptist hospital and had an attachment point rigged on the middle of the handle the hooked to a spring swing arm that also carried the coax and 12V DC to the sets. I am not sure why they did not use the 110V AC input, maybe safety codes. I bought one and have no idea what happened to it. Other than the scrapes on the top of the set from the mounting it looked ok and worked great.

I didn't notice that 1722, and I wouldn't mind having one. I used to get a lot of those and they were easy to sell on the used market in the late 80s. I would order the upgraded 470FWB22 CRT, which looked a lot nicer than the original type. I recall getting $350 each for those sets back then!

Maybe not rare everywhere... And I have seen some of the monitor version on eBay. It might be that they just didnt' sell very well since the 9" sets were probably cheaper, and if you wanted a really portable set, you'd probably go for the 5" at the time.

I have a bunch of the hospital KV-5100s... I don't think it was a mistake not to buy the ones you saw, because rare or not, these sets aren't worth big $$$. I would guess $150 for a mint condition one today, but probably $25 tops for a well-worn hospital one.

I probably do have too many 5000s & 5100s... Some day I'll thin them out, and will make a post here when I do that.
