Solar CB-160 Restoration

I got this Solar CB-160 cap checker at our annual club swap meet this summer.

So I decided to restore it. I replaced all the resistors. The candohm was shot so I used 5 5W resistors soldered together to make up a new candohm. The only cap I kept was the 181pf mica cap. I used 2 4.7uf caps instead of the 4uf called for in the parts list. All the wiring was replaced with stranded 20awg 600V wire. I added a fuse and holder and replaced the line cord.

It works pretty good. The resistance scales are surprisingly accurate. So are the capacitor ranges. I still need to refinish the cabinet.

BTW, does anybody know where I can get a replacement leather handle? Mine was missing.

Nice work. Your lucky to have one with it's original transformer working. Mine and some others I've seen have had replacement transformers bolted to the outside of the cabinet.

One day I've got to restore mine and put it head to head with my Heathkit C-3.
