Thanks for the input guys. I think I can manage to rig up a test speaker and power resistor like you described.
Although it does sound like fun, I'm no carpenter and don't have the tools anyway so I'll have to farm out the task of fabricating new legs.

Here's a little video I made while polishing up that cadmium. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-n8-vY7OBaQ

I was doing some more poking around and discovered that the RCA 220, 221 and 222 share the same chassis. Here's the 221 where you can see what the speaker looked like: http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/rca_221.html

Now I have an idea what to look for

And from the radiomuseum picture you can see the same style of legs used between the 221 and 222.

Yeah, similar anyway - can't tell if their fluted or just chamfered in the 221.

Maybe take some square stock, tapered a couple sides and chamfer / flute the outer edge. Unfortunately, I don't currently have access to any power tools

I picked up this 12", 1500 ohm VC speaker for 99 cents. The seller says it came from an RCA. The only marking I see is RL-69-4. It's in pretty good shape - only one small crack. It's just a little too big for the cabinet - probably a 10" would be perfect.
Regardless, it's certainly something to use for now

That was a bargain for that speaker, looks like it would work fine. A little bit of coffee filter paper and fabric glue will fix the tears. Fabric glue is strong and remains flexible (crafts or fabric stores.)After the cone is cleaned up and fixed, if you want, you can brush on a little artist's acrylic black paint on the repair.

I've had a search for "RCA 222" setup with email alerts on ebay for over 3 years and one finally popped up!

Unfortunately, it's in Syosset, NY - local pickup only. At least now I have some good reference photos of the original legs and speaker.

Can anyone recommend a woodworker capable of making some replica legs and shelf ?

A very nice empty cabinet just showed up on ebAy. Exactly what I've been looking for. Unfortunately, it's in Georgia.

Can anyone out that way pick it up for me ?

I love it when a plan comes together A friend has a sister in South Carolina that was able to pick it up, pack it and bring it to a Greyhound station. It just arrived this afternoon.

Wow, what a beautiful example of '30's moderne! It's really streamlined.

Finally, a few months ago I located an original speaker in excellent condition!
The output transformer is not original though.

Now all that's left is to get it working

Rather unusual mounting system where the speaker hangs below a cross beam.
