If you do any time shifting on VHS then you might want to look for an S-VHS or S-VHS-ET deck. S-VHS has about twice the monochrome signal detail as regular VHS, and the same goes for the S-VHS-ET machines with the added benefit of being able to record that quality on a regular VHS tape.
