'78 Panasonic "Quintrix II" 9" color TV
I got this '78 Panasonic CT-117 "Quintrix II" 9" color TV from an 83 year old man just a little while ago. Over the past two weeks, I fixed two older TV's for him: an '85 Sears 19" and a '76 Sears 13" (both made by Toshiba). See, there are still a few people who will have older TV's fixed. He said he has an old color console that he thinks is from the '60's that he might want me to fix. Right now, he's using it for a TV stand. He also said he thinks he still has the first B&W TV that he ever bought back in the '50's and that he'd give it to me if he could find it.
This Panasonic comes to life; but, it needs a tuner and control cleaning. Also, this is an AC only set. I've seen some similar sets that were AC/DC. I'm sure this set will have a good picture when I'm done with it. |

Looks like an afternoon spent w/Windex, some rags, & a few Q-Tips will spiffy it up...

Sweet! Thats the set my dad used to have!! Thats the exact one! OMG, it's from 1978??? I feel old now! That's a rare breed.. Delta gun CRT with squared off corners.. (at least I think I remember it being a delta gun CRT)
Wish I still had our old Panasonic

I haven't opened mine yet to see what kind of tube is in it. I think these little sets were very popular among the travel trailer / motorhome crowd.
I know Panasonic made some good stuff back then. I've got a little '78 3" Panasonic B&W TV/radio combo that works great and I've had it for years. When I got it, all it needed was it's DC input jack resoldered to the PC board. |

If that's the set I remember, it does have a great picture indeed-at or near Trinitron quality.

I don't understand. If it's a delta gun tube how is it anything like the trinitron? Is it the shadow mask or lack thereof? Aperture grille?

I did look in the back and there is no electronic convergence circuitry like what I'd expect to see on a delta gun tube. IIRC, the CRT is a 200FB22. It does have a large neck with the same kind of base that the older delta gun tubes have.

I just meant the one I saw had a bright, sharp, clear picture without HV regulation/blooming or edge enhancement/ringing problems. Trinitrons are my standard of high quality for TV sets of that era.

Oh okay. I agree, too....even the late model Sonys with the failure prone chassis' usually looked good in terms of stiff HV regulation in a hi-contrast picture....and the old ones are phenomenal all around

The delta gun used in the quintrix tube is not standard.
Panasonic placed a flat grid between the first and second grids on that design. It was a very short lived "dog" design, used less than a year, not many made. |
