Pye W101 Restoration

Here's a piccy of my PYE W101A fully restored, both cabinet and chassis. It's had a full recap apart from the can electrolytics which amazingly after reforming all came up within spec. I will however eventually remove and repack the cans with new electros as I don't trust them long term. It has the original CRT with ion trap and magnetic focus rings. I found many high value 1/2W carbon resistors which required replacement. The 1W ones were almost always within spec. I had to source new 6CM5, 6BM8 and 6AL3 valves for it. The others all being good. It has four 6BX6 IF stages and was designed for fringe area reception which was common in Australia at the time. It's a no holes barred design and has 23 valves in total. I'm encouraged to look for more resto prospects now but ones of this vintage in Aus are very hard to find.

(I hope the image upload works).

An interesting set. Nice to see something different from the typical US stuff.

What year was it made? If it were American, I'd guess early 1950s, but I know nothing of Pye.

Regards,

Phil Nelson

It was made in 1956 and was one of the first sets available in Aus at the time. The big push for the introduction of Television in Aus was the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne.
