How many people actually had color TV in 1956? Was it even worth it for any TV station to telecast in color in the '50s, when there were may have been very few color sets at that time?

It was like any new technology. For cars to be widely accepted, they had to come down in price AND there had to be gasoline stations AND better roads. It didn't all happen overnight but grew year by year. RCA owned NBC. If they wanted to sell sets, there had to be something to watch, and of course they could get the color programs broadcast on their network. There would be a lot of color signal out there going to monochrome sets for many years. Seeing that peacock and hearing the "living color" announcement on one's B&W set made one think did he want to invest all that money or not, and at least kept color on his mind.
