Old colour tellies vs new

Hi all. I've noticed for a while with the these so called "GREAT" new 68cm and even 51cm colour tellies that are blackstripe, the phosphors look more spaced apart and even from a 2 metre distance I can still easily see the spacing between phosphors or the gap between each horizontal line which is so noticeable on Sony 68cm tellies made from the mid 90s onwards. To me I think that is shithouse!!!

My late 1970s 48cm Toshiba colour TV set gives a much nicer picture than that! What's up with todays CRT tellies??? I assume that they've gone black stripe to give a sharper picture or to make it easier to view when the loungeroom cops the sunlight but the spacing between the phosphors is too noticeable and the picture detail looks lost.

I assume a lot of people here would agree seeing this is an old telly forum, but I would like some thoughts, opinions and reasons to why today's TVs are like that.

Anyways looking forward to some responses.

Cheers
Troy

Hi Aussie Bloke,

It is likely so as to contrast the quality of the old standard television sets with HD television sets. With HD the scan lines are thinner (I think 4 times the scanning lines)... almost totally unnoticable. The industry is trying to get you to say "forget this 4:3 ratio, I'm buying HD." OK, this kind of sounds like a conspiracy theory, but since my father used to work for Phillips, and called it "planned obsolesence" it is unfortunately true.

I have a Phillips 32 inch digital HD ready (I got it 3 years ago) but is 4:3 ratio and looks every bit as good as any older set I have seen. No scan lines visible.

BTW, HD is awesome.
