hmmm... didn'r think of that. It would be more obvious if it was part of a sign with other hotel features, but you're right - it's hard to picture another kind of place with a sign like this.

It's some sort of reproduction/fake made recently in a country where they don't speak English. Seriously--those fonts are both of recent vintage (and smack of desktop publishing.) And no one says "televisions in color," never mind putting a period after it. Where did this come from?

Actually, "Tel;evisions - Now in Color" sounds somewhat British, but I see nothing incorrect. Of course, if it were British, it would be "in Colour"

Last time I see the sign "COLOR TV" on one of the motel close to me a couple weeks ago. I think it's still there.

"TELEVISION" would be the original Motel blurb" with "- NOW IN COLOR" being added, that would probably be the best way to say that they have Television, as always, but now they're using color sets. |

I agree the CONTENT of the sign is not that strange - for a 1960's Tv dealership or hotel. But as mentioned, the graphic style does not seem to fit the time period. So it's an enigma.

I wouldn't rule out a repro. A while ago I bought a little "Expert television servicing" sign on unmentionablebay. In response to another shopper's question, the seller had stated that it was NOS. Anyway, it only cost a few bucks. It took him about three weeks to ship it (after a reminder by me). In person, it looks like something he just stenciled on his dining room table, drips and all. Still cute, but who's to say where it really came from?
There are loads of repro signs floating around nowadays, and repro radios for that matter. Someone who picks one up at a garage sale, etc., might actually think they have something old. Not everyone trading on unmentionablebay is a genius or expert Phil |
