GE P880A portable transistor radio
I just obtained this GE model P880A battery/AC operated transistor radio from late '61-early '62. This is probably one of the first AC/battery operated models that contains a built-in AC power supply. This set still works well on original components and I'm not going to recap it unless it someday needs it to function. the power supply board consist of a step down transformer, a top hat diode, and a big orange cardboard tubular Pyramid filter capacitor. Unlike many of these that I've seen, the battery box is in good shape. GE also made an older tube portable that used this exact same cabinet.

Yeah, I have, if not this model, then its "Double-first Cousin", too. Very good performer, I think. This was long enuf ago, they hadn't figured out how to make them ENTIRELY so cheap & nasty...

When I first looked at it, I thought it was a tube job, but bought it anyway. Some of them were only five transistor, but worked real well. |
