1954 RCA Prototype 19" round color CRT

Hi all!

Is anyone familiar with the 19" round color tube that RCA worked on in 1953/54? It was nearly identical to the 15GP22, except for the size. Similar mask, screen, metal-glass bulb, etc.

I'm just curious if any of these have ever turned up....or if any RCA Color Prototype TVs with this 19" round color CRT inside, are known.

Thanks! Harry

I don't think so; at least not known of in the "main stream" of TV collectors. I've had a hand full of CBS 19" tube sets (a Hoffman and 2 CBS-Columbia sets), but the only RCA prototypes I know of are 15" Model 5's. There are 4 or 5 other weird color tubes at the UCLA collection, including (if I recall), a prototype to the 15GP22.

I believe the RMA designation for that tube was 19TP22. It was based on 15GP22 design. If you search through SAMS, you might find a set or two that were covered that used that tube. The CBS tube, 19V, was clearly superior, so the 19T was abandoned before it was used in any number.

19TP22 round color prototype

Charles--thanks!

I've sold a couple of the early 15GP22 prototype CRTs over the years, the style with the bolts showing through the mask. And at least one of the 15" prototype TVs.

Kevin--thanks for the 19TP22 designation info.

This was the first time I ever heard of it, so like you, I suspect they never went into any kind of production, and if they made one or two prototypes, it was a lot!

Harry

PS--for what it's worth, I did find a little on Pete's page about this CRT...if you do a Find in Page: 19TP22, it'll make it easy to spot!
