Future color collectible?

http://cgi.ebay.com/RCA-secureview-c...QQcmdZViewItem

I see a lot of these 'Secure-View' sets on ebay. They look cool since you can see the innards! Anybody think these might be collectible a lot sooner than one might think? Since new CRT sets are on the wane, this security feature would not be needed on say an LCD or other thin-screen sets.
I might pick one up for my teenage nephews. I wonder how many were made since it sounds like a special feature for security purposes and not just a mass-market set (?)

These sets are made for use in Prisons. The clear case is to prevent people hiding things inside the TV case. A while back there was a post on this forum where someone found a clear cased B&W set (Zenith) from memory in a thrift store.

I'd like one as it's they are the only clear cased sets I can think off that were made for something other than promotional or prototyping purposes. I've seen them and clear cased radios as props in various TV shows set in Prisons, but I've never actually seen one myself. I wonder if they actually use similar clear cased sets here in Australian prisons. I want one, but not enough to pay shipping from the USA.

My hands have actually touched the Lucite TRK-12 famed in pictures

It's at the MZTV museum in Toronto. Too bad the only piece of lucite still original is the lid......the rest was remade from the crashed pieces after somebody drove into the original cabinet with a forklift somewhere in the Middle East, where the set was found by Moses Znaimer.

I googled the model number of the set in the ebay link above and found a post on a Prison related forum where relatives of inmates were complaining about the high cost of these sets... $213! It seems several prisons only allow these of sets and don't allow used sets (supposedly to prevent items being smuggled inside the set, despite the clear case and security screws). Seem a lot for a clear case and less features. Not only do they not have remotes, some version lack have no internal speaker and can only be used with headphones.

Most of the clear prison TVs I've run across on eBay were RCA/GE with the TX-82 chassis. So I suppose it would be no big deal to swap the nonremote chassis for a regular one. I think I've seen that chassis with stereo too!

On a related subject, I've often pondered the idea of making a lucite case for my Zenith 1972 color set 25DC56 chassis... Such a nice bronze chassis and so HUGE for an all solid state set! I'd add a hidden lighting system in the case to highlight the chassis.

Maybe in about 75 years when I catch up on "real work"...

I also see some KME (Kmart) clear cased sets but the plastic on them is more of a satin nature and you can't really see crystal clear thru them (like the RCA's), I wouldn't want one of those.

Some early transistor radios used "reverse painting" on clear plastic cabinets. One of these TV cabinets might look really cool if you disassemble it and paint the insides some favorite color (I think dark colors like black would look best. This assuming that you're not serving time....

Or how about painting the inside with thin white paint, and then installing a bunch of colored leds on a board inside to point in different directions at the inside of the case? Might look pretty cool. Make 'em blink or cycle too.
