Once upon a time, I wouldn't have hesitated for a moment to have turned my nose up to ANYTHING that didn't have "R" & "3 XXX in its name, but now I've softened a bit in my dotage. Let's face it, SW basically sounds like @ss most of the time, there's a lot less Englisch programming on every year, & DXing FM signals can be almost as fun, & the audio is WAY better. Look into an SX-42, 43 or 62 from Hallicrafters. You get a receiver that's very nearly as sensitive as the fabled Collins/Motorola R-3(Cough, cough), but along w/a PASSEL of firebottles yr set will get yr local FM purveyor of radio that AIN'T in Swahili/Tagalog/Romulan or Klingon. The 62 DON'T have a BFO, but it DOES have a strong mono FM section, &it was likely styled by Raymond Loewy of postwar Studebaker fame. I don't think they use any bad, oddball tubes, they're big, & servicing them isn't too onerous, what more can you ax for ?!?
