Rather dramatic Plasma TV repair attempt results video
This one seemed like a rather routine Chinese e-Cap replacement/failure exercise "until" the power up test; you can skip over to time index ~~ 5:00min and see the fun. And to think this was probably a $2000-$3000 TV when new; sigh....

I'm getting a dead 50" Panasonic Plasma from a friend this weekend, have no idea what's wrong with it or what model it is, hopefully an easy repair, if not off to the recycle it goes.

Having worked on that model before, I wondered what the heck he did wrong-
He mentioned in a reply to another commenter that the recap didn't fix it, and he popped a buffer board. That ticked him off, so he bypassed the fuses and ran a light ballast into the mains. That's what you're seeing. I wondered why he wasted time with the recap and then was expecting to see smoke... |

It seemed as he was HAPPY...everything just "burned up"...as if he PLANNED it this way !!
WHat a WASTE of TIME !! |

Or MORE---maybe 4-5 k..!! I KNOW..as late as the fall of 2003..a 42 inch Samsung "EDTV" set..was STILL selling for around 3k...and I thik this is OLDER than those sets !! OTOH...I recently SUCCESSFULLY repaired a 42 inch Samsung that had a couple of bad caps like this ALONG with a pair of shorted MOSFETS on the VA and lower B+ supplies. The set was several years newer than this one, with HD and a couple of HDMI inputs. And last year about this time...I SUCCESSFULLY repaired A newer LG plasma , IRC this size or maybe a 50 inch...with JUST bad caps--and it did NOT go "up in smoke"... Not sure WHAT went wrong on this repair. he just seemed so HAPPY..it self-destructed like that !! The VS going to OVER 500 VOLTS? (It SHOULD be around 200 volts or often a bit LESS..) tells ME...he MUST have SOMEHOW...messed UP something in the feedback ckt BADLY..during his "cap replacement".. |

I'd imagine, but don't forget to burn out the panel in that cool way first or else it's just going to waste.
