My HDTV box wouldn't let me zoom

This brings up a question I've brought up in other posts and searched online for, and I haven't been able to get a straight answer. In my experience, I've found that certain DTV receivers & converter boxes allow you to change the aspect ratio on certain channels, while others don't. I haven't figured out the correlation to this. Does anyone have an explanation?

Some channels lock their aspect ratio decode (zoom mode).

Also, I've sometimes seen goofy things like network pillar boxing a 4:3 show to fit a 16:9 HD signal, the affiliate letterboxing that image to get 4:3 (instead of zooming like they should have) and that then going through another stage or two of that and ending up on screen as a 7" on a 20" CRT.... It depends on how smart and or dumb the equipment, engineers and people directing the engineers are.... There are PLENTY of dumbasses out there that see a 4:3 show pillar boxed on their new 16:9 flat screen, and call the station to complain about 'those black bars on the sides'.

Looking at 21-CT-55 pictures on the web, there appear to have been two different sets of legs that came on those. One set was wood with a brass ferrule at the end, and the other set of legs were completely brass. I didn't think the cabinet I had from Tom had legs on it as I remembered the cabinet being fairly close to the ground, but when I went to the storage bin today and looked, I got a surprise. This cabinet came with the brass legs, but someone had sloppily hack-sawed them to about 2 inches in length. I wonder if a previous owner had damaged the bottom of one of the legs, and then cut them all down to try to make them even. As they are, all they would do is gouge whatever floor they were on. So no, sorry, I don't have a good set of legs for Tim.

Very nice!
I watch such little broadcast entertainment TV these days, I forget to check the schedule in December to look for these reruns.

Edit - Looks like it reruns Thursday - it's set to record!

Yes. It’s a remote set and the gearbox was frozen and we could not operate the controls when purchased. The set had a full restoration.

Here's some more photos I took while I watched Rudolph tonight on my CTC-11. No photoshop used on any of these, or the two I posted earlier.

And a Frosty thrown in for good measure.

Merry Christmas to you guys too! I really enjoy seeing the holiday programs on everyone's vintage sets.

I am a little surprised at the lack of participation in this tread, though, but have to admit it took me a while to even notice this thread way down here in the basement.

The CTC-5 has been behaving well lately:

The Admiral was looking rather sick when I turned it on but gradually it came around. I better give it some TLC in the new year:

The Zenith also acted a little squirrely when I awoke it from its 6 month long nap, but slowly it came around:
