Merchantilist Japan's overriding rule for selection of a camera is never pay for an import:
They would rather fall on a sword than buy anything from America.

Not so (at least in the beginings). "Hitachi" CT-150 color tv sets had "R.C.A." 22CYP22A picture tubes.

I've seen early Japanese transistor radios with American transistors in them, I also have an APF desktop calculator from the 1970s that has an American Texas Instruments CPU IC in it.
