Had a few parts laying around

So I put them together and ended up with this a one tube regen. With the bench supply and a long wire it hears as good as AA5 just not as loud. I've often wondered how well a very simple set would work I've been pleasantly surprised. Selectivity is good even with strong station near by. Will run well with 3- D cells and 5- 9v batteries. Was able to catch The Great Gildersleeve the other night out of Canada with any problem. Want to add a few more parts to improve the circuit. A throttle cap may help it regenerate at a lower plate volt and a choke in the headphone lead as I'm getting a little interaction when I touch or move them.

I always love regen sets; there's so much you can do with so little and they're a lot of fun, especially using vintage parts the way you did. Wonder if a small cap from the upper phone connection to ground would get rid of the RF in the phone leads. Or a choke, as you said: choke could be a winding connected from just about any little transformer you have lying around. Another thing you can try: glue aluminum foil on the bottom of the wooden board, and connect it to common ground: can help with hand capacity effects, stability. How low can you go with the B+? Lots of them will work OK with 18 or 27 volts.

Have fun!

Doing it like the ancients did

It will still work at 20v or so but the volume is pretty low. 45v seem to be a good compromise for loudness and regeneration. Did try it at 135v but it made the regeneration hard to control. Hand capacity isn't a problem except for the fone cable. Was thinking of winding up some period like a old wooden thread spool with a few hundred turns of fine wire. I did try putting in a throttle cap from the 201 plate to ground which was 180mmfd and 120 mmfd Worked better with 180 than none and 120 was better than 180. Thinking around 90mmfd might be the best. Common ground is a good thing on regens I like to heavier gauge wire but I happen to have a bunch of this 22g handy. Doesn't seem to critical at the bc band doesn't seem to drift. I've built some that go up to 15 or 20mc there it's a different story.

Very cool. Reminds me of this homebrew radio I recently stumbled across on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

A couple of years ago I built a regen, 76 detector, 76 first audio, 38 audio output (just because it had a top cap and looked cool) and a small transformer power supply on board, using a silicon diode because I didn't think I could squeeze any more heater juice out of the transformer.

Nice! Bc band? I'm also a Ham and I wanted to really understand how these things work. So out came the solder iron and the adventure began. This what I ended up with. A 6C8 and 6V6. Does bc band to 15mc Wound up bandspread coils 160, 80, and 40,mtrs Still working on it as I never wired up the noise limiter. Have used it on the air alot with a low power AM/CW transmitter.

The 3-tuber I did was BC band only and set up for experimentation: thus the sliding coils on the crosspiece. It could easily be changed for plug-in coils. Check out the zot-style speaker cutout.

I dig your SW set and how that antenna trimmer cap works!
