Farnsworth 651p TV - what to do with it? Videokarma's opinion?
How's it going members?
i asked this on arf in 2010 when i discovered that site and got different opinions. just curious what videokarma members think? #1 should i re-cap it #2 dont touch it and leave it as original as possilble?(i did some small vert repairs when i got it in 1982-iirc-was mostly original parts except for pix tube and 0 tubes-had most tubes in stock back then). #2 if i do recap it, is this set rare enough to restuff caps for originality? #3 how many 651p tvs are out there and how many work?(mine still worked a few years ago when i did these youtubes-wont risk powering it up again until a recap) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PR8JU9uhi78 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EKBFUSVHF4 most arf members figured that i should recap but a bunch figured that i should leave as-is due to the rareity. thanks to aft for the service data and missing knobs(still gotta source a speaker for it and a lock-good luck on finding a lock-ha! comments pls? here are the original arf forum links - got lots of pms about this set as well. http://www.antiqueradios.com/forums/...p?f=3&t=122536 http://www.antiqueradios.com/forums/...p?f=3&t=143501 http://www.antiqueradios.com/forums/...p?f=3&t=249824 i'm still on the fence about the best way to deal with this set. cheers, RonL |

I'd restuff when I recap it, to preserve the original look and also have the set useful.
I wouldn't want to buy an antique car and not be able to drive it, why any different with an antique TV? . |

i hear ya WISCOJIM.many thanks for the advice.
but i have also been advised to leave as is (keep as original as possible) because of the rareity of this set? ordinarily i would re-cap but i havent seen many of these sets over the years.still not sure what do do at this point... any other members want to give thier "2 cents worth"? have a good one, RonL |

I would do a careful restoration including restuffing the caps and using old carbon composition resistors.
