Thanks for the pics. I forgot about Rudolph, and probably would have fired up the CTC-4 and the Portacolor to watch it. I'll look for more specials with which to celebrate the holidays while watching on my vintage color receivers.

HA! I actually should move that upstairs. That set is too nice to be "banished" in the basement. LOLLIPOP!
Kind of a funny story on this one.... got it off eBay 6 years ago. Got in a bidding war... paid $300.00 for it, and drove to Little Rock,AR to get it.
The set had ALL RCA branded tubes and was on a service contract until the early 80's.
RCA "black matrix" picture tube replacement installed in 1977.
It's a 1st generation CTC16. 1964

I had the Grinch on my CTC-9 and Admiral color (2010 convention score). Should have snapped a pic.

Kim mentioned to me that it was on tonight and I didn't even think to crank up one of the old sets, darn! (all I could think of was, didn't I just watch old Rudy about a month ago? Nope, it was a year already!)

i have the same set.mine is a ctc15 that i got from a customer while on the job.vdc picture tube, remote set.2 hand units and it was very well taken care of.i hauled it around all day while i was running my leads that day.it had a vertical issue and the owner had tried to repair himself.he removed every carbon slug from the coils!also removed all the remote electronics.it was a nightmare to get it back to watchable condition.the vertical was a resistor of the height control.very sharp picture and the cabinet is beautiful.i think the ctc15 and 16s are the best roundies.yours is a beauty!

Thanks! As you can tell tho.. the picture tube has slight delamination in the upper right corner, but you can't see it when the set is on.. (the picture flash made it look worse than it is) I'm pretty sure the picture tube is Grade AA, so surprised it would be doing that from a 1977 tube, but my Sylvania roundie has a rebuild from the 80's and it's got the green halo.....

Yep, the flash makes it look much worse than it is. That happened to me a couple of times when trying to sell a set lol. I wish you were closer Jamie, I'd remove the cataract for you. Lord knows I owe you anyway CTC 16 wa Utsukushii desu! (beautiful)

There' just SOMETHING about watchin' "Grinch" & "Rudolph" on an old Roundie that is so...SPECIAL... Never got to watch EITHER one when I was a kid...They-ESPECIALLY "Rudolph" were on Sunday nites, & my mom was one of those that thought if we weren't at church every time the doors opened, we'd all go to Heck...

Watching Rudolph has been a yearly event for me since it first started airing in the mid 1960's. But the version you all see today over the air has been altered from the original.

About 4 years ago a fellow by the name of Rick Goldschmidt was selling an all original DVD version, including commercials and deleted/altered sequences, just as first broadcast on Sunday Dec.6, 1964. I was lucky enough to purchase one of those copies. It was part of the General Electric Fantasy Hour and consequently all of the commercials were for GE home appliances. The elves used in the Rudolph story served double duty in the GE commercials. Interestingly, although Rudolph was in color, the GE commercials were in black and white.

We had just gotten our Zenith color roundie (chassis 25MC33) about 2 weeks before Rudolph premiered. With a beautiful new color TV in our house, we had plenty of company all the time. That was certainly a Christmas to remember. Bob

Seems like these Christmas specials are airing earlier and earlier each year! I seem to recall years ago they would air around the second week of December. But airing in November was unheard of.

They also are broadcast more than once each Christmas season, an idea unheard of until the last 10 years or so.

Beside the "matching" commercials, have any changes been made to the show itself?
