Sony Trinitron Color KV-5200 screen issues

Hi all,

I recently acquired a Sony KV-5200 with a red bar across the top of the screen. Does anyone know what this may be and is it repairable?
Here's a youtube video with the same issue.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55NPvad1poA

Thanks.
Brian

Have you attached a signal source yet? That bar may disappear when you do.

On the video, it looks like an on-screen graphic problem. In that era, they would use dedicated character generator ICs.

I have not attacked a signal source yet. I'm waiting for an adapter. Thanks for all the help. If the problem still persists i'll try to find someone locally to fix it when things return back to normal.

Thanks you.

If you are supplying it RF signal you don't absolutely need an adapter to test it. Take some thin non-stranded wire, stick one end in the center hole of the F type coax RF output connector on your RF modulator, and wrap the other end of the wire around the TVs antenna. Picture may be a bit fuzzy but you should be able to get a picture...TVs were designed to work on over the air RF signals much worse than what this arrangement should provide.

lt looks like a tuning bar. If there are numbers above the screen that is what it
is. It may go away with a signal or there may be a switch that makes it go
after channels are preset.

I doubt there is anything wrong with that tv. When that set is turned on without a signal source it will hunt for a channel. If it’s a red bar showing at the top it is searching for channels VHF 2-6. If the bar at the top is yellow it is searching for channels VHF 7-13. If the bar is green it is searching for Channels UHF 14-83. If you attach a dvd or vhs player to the external input the graph bar should find the channel and disappear. These sets will show a bar if no signal is detected. The buttons the operators manual is referencing is behind a little door on the front of the tv near the power on/off button.

Sony sold what was called a EAC-6 (external antenna connector). One would have come with the tv but they are up on eBay frequently. One could also be made if you were so inclined. This tv could have any of the 14 preset buttons to have any channel programmed to that button. The channels are probably already programmed but since we have no more analog signals being done over the air you won’t receive anything. I have 3 of these sets and watch with the tv being on channel 3 or 4 and use a DTV converter box to watch something on it. Also a DVD player would work if it had a RF output, same with a VHS or Betamax machine could make it work too.
