dictionary for rookies
I would like to make a suggestion. For guys like me who just happen a long into the wonderful world of antique radio. I think it would be infinitely helpful if there was a sticky which contained some basic short definitions of terms that have come up during my adventure. It could seem mundane to those who have a lot of experience, but sometimes just a quick reference of some of the simplest tube terms can help communication a lot. For instance, IF, oscillator, plate, B+, cathode, triode, wafer, mica cap, rectifier there are a lot more. I would do it myself but I am not experienced enough to define them properly. I'm not talking about the long explanation, those can be linked or looked up, just a quick reference for use in discussions here on the forum.
Anyone game? Martin

Here's one for a start: go to NostalgiaAir, click on References, Tips & Training, Glossaries. 1939 RCA Radio Glossary.

Keep you eye out for this book: Modern Dictionary of Electronics by Rudolf F. Graf
I have the 3rd edition from '68 I picked it up at a local junk store for $2. I saw another copy at a hamfest today for $15. The newest edition is $75, but the older one will do just fine if you are working on just about anything pre 1980's. Here is a pic of the cover for the 3rd ed. If you would like maybe I could post some of their definitions? Should check my big unabridged Webster's to see how many terms are in both...... Ah if I had ALL the time in the world. To start you off.... B+ Postive terminal of a B battery (Note: From the early days of battery radio) or the positive polarity of other sources of anode voltage. The terminal to which the positive side of the anode voltage source should be connected Cathode- In an electron tube the electrode through which a primary source of electrons enters the interelectrode space 2. General name for any negative electrode. 3. The lower potential electrode of a corrosion cell where the action of the corrosion current may reduce or eliminate corrosion, or the negatively charged metallic parts of an impressed current system. 4. When a semiconductor diode is biased in the forward direction, that terminal of the diode which is negative with respect to the other termnal. I.F.- Intermediate Frequency a frequency to which a signal wave is shifted locally as an intermediate step in transmission or reception. (Note: Done to convert transmitted or recieved signal to a frequency the reeciver/transmitter can handle with out distortion, and be able to convert many different frequencies {when switching frequencies} to one where a single frequency tuned detector can used) To Be Continued...... |
